Lost 5x14 - The Variable / very late review and probably not really trustworthy.
Premise: I watched this in between two views of SPN 4x20, which means that I probably a) lost stuff because I was up with the SPN squee fest and b) that it was bound to lose in comparison. Also, it won't be as meta-ish and detailed because I could barely bear to think about what happened at the end, so this won't exactly be a squee fest.

1. Now. This wasn't a bad episode. Not exactly worthy of it being number 100 actually, I'd have expected much more, but anyway. Not bad. Until the ending.

Premise: I loved Daniel's story. I thought it was a great wrap-up, I liked learning more about him, I didn't exactly like the mommy issues and I said that Widmore was his dad three minutes into the episode. I loved that scene with wee!Charlotte, even if I didn't get why did she say he was scary when she died since to me he looked everything but scary. I love Jeremy Davies and his acting. And I actually loved that SOMEONE wanted to change things and thought he could.

Other premise: I knew he was gonna die. Because I spoil myself and on the spoiler site where I go there was a poll and it was down to him and another character and it was clear he was going to be the one to go. And so I thought, well, he'll die in an experiment or in the Orchid or he'll sacrifice himself in order to bring them back in their right time. So I was like, well, if he dies that way, I can live with it. (Even if Daniel was totally in my top ten characters right now and I'd have rather lost a lot of people before him.)

And what do we get?

He dies SHOT IN THE BACK by his own mother. Who is Eloise Hawking. Aka, one of those characters which I'm sure that Darlton think we need to care about and whom I've seen for, like, maybe five episodes in five seasons and whom I always could do without. And sorry, but dying like this? LAME. Lame. Lame. After shouting LAME three times I said that at this point he could bond with Shannon considering that they died in exactly the same way except that she wasn't shot from behind, and lasamy there was agreeing with me a lot.

Really? That was it? With a character who had such potential and still an entire story to tell? Thanks so much. I'm really not okay with it and I'm glad I was spoiled because otherwise I'd have been way less nice, if this is calling it nice. I could think of at least five other ways to make him go which wouldn't have be lame as this one. The only thing redeeming that scene was that delightful pink shirt of Richard's. I think I need to become a full-on Richard fan and since he's immortal I'll be okay.

2. Also, what's with killing all the people who aren't leads? Really. Give me a fucking break. I wish I could say I was crying at it, but I just couldn't for how lame and anti-climatic it was. Thanks. Really.

3. Dear Radzinsky, knowing you're going to blow your brains off sometime doesn't exactly make me cry. No thanks, me.

4. I see bad things ahead for Sawyer and Juliet. I still like them, but it won't last. I just know.

5. The Jack/Sawyer interaction was the third best part of this episode really, imho. The first best part was Jeremy Davies who is just too good of an actor and whom I'll greatly miss seeing weekly.

6. The second best part was Jack going around almost naked in the beginning. THAT was drool-worthy. Dear Jack, thanks for existing. Even when you don't do much, you always make me happy someway and redeem stuff. Thanks, me.

7. Yay for Des and Pen, even if I was sure he wasn't going to die. I mean, really, after he had the strength to punch Ben like that he couldn't have died. And yay for Des anyway since lately I barely see him.

8. Miles is still awesome. He'd better be careful though. Well, he and Frank, since they're the only ones from the boat still around.

9. Dear Darlton, I think you missed a point. The point is, I don't give a damn about Eloise and I don't give a damn about Charles Widmore. Stop trying to make me care for them, because I don't, I just don't. Just trim the characters already and focus on the people we give a damn about, not about people whom we have seen in a total of fifteen episodes and suddenly are crucial to the story. Thanks.

10. I wasn't expecting another Constant, sure, but this fact that the variables are people and the person who knew aka Dan died doesn't make me happy at all. Shit, if there isn't a chance things are going to change I don't see why they bothered to go time-traveling at all, but I'm giving them another chance. I didn't quit for Boone, I'm sticking until the end.

11. That said, it was mostly disappointing, especially for the ending. Maybe I'm comparing it with the squee fest that was before, but anyway, it really wasn't a match. Blah.

12. Richard was incredibly pretty though. ♥ And reasonable. And nice. And I just don't get why he isn't the chief already and why he ever bothered with Ben or Jacob in the first place. And that's pretty much all.

Word to all this. What a disappointing episode. Like you I enjoyed 90% of it because Jeremy Davies really made me care for Daniel. But the ending sucked. If Dan had to go, my dog could have written a more satisfying or ironic death.

Yes. Very yes. Don't worry, I am going to go back in time and make Radzinsky Mrs. Hawking's son, and all will be right with the world.

I think it is funny that Jack is always taking showers, and this appearing half naked all the time (or twice). Janitorial work is stinky business.

Richard - pink shirt....must go back to watch...
the female ghost of tom joad: lost othersjanie_tangerine on May 4th, 2009 06:29 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm glad that Sawyer gave him janitorial work then! Sincerely if I get to see Jack naked things get partially better every time, but bear with me. I need my eye candy and Sawyer doesn't undress anymore. ;)

I think that losing Jeremy Davies was pretty much a stupid move. He really is great and the bare fact that he managed to sell this episode until the end is the proof, but ah well. They always kill the good characters *sigh*.

Uh, I like Radzinsky being their son! It'd also make a loot of sense. Indeed. The sooner he gets out of my sight, the better it'll be.

The pink shirt was DELIGHTFUL. And that model especially was incredibly smart on him. Mmmmmm. I hope he keeps the outfit!

Lazy is exactly the right word. Blah. Totally not what I was expecting.

Welcome back, Janie!

Hmmn. Maybe it's just because I'm not watching S5 but I'm finding it very soap opera-ish that Daniel is the son of Widmore/Hawkings and Miles is Marvin Candles son and Jack, like, still doesn't seem to care that Claire is sister. Really, all I need now is for Charlie Hume to turn out to be Charlie Pace and learn that my OTP were father and son but they never knew it.
the female ghost of tom joad: lost hurley and charliejanie_tangerine on May 4th, 2009 06:59 pm (UTC)
Thanks!

Ha, no, you're right. It's very, very The Bold And The Beautiful right now without the incest factor (if Charlie Hume isn't Charlie Pace, and then it'd be done). I'm really not liking it actually. I don't give a damn who's fathering whom and when they said that Widmore was Daniel's dad I was like 'well, and I read ten fics where it happened, how exciting!'. *rolls eyes*
elliotsmelliot: Frankelliotsmelliot on May 4th, 2009 07:40 pm (UTC)
Okay, I promised myself that I wouldn't get into these sort of things anymore but I just had to nod along with this conversation. Regardless of the family tree drama, it is also lame how repetitive the freighter folk's backstories have turned out to be. Three of them having parents on the island whose decisions fucked up their children. It's like Miles being able to hear the dead, it becomes much less interesting when anyone and their uncle can do a variation on that talent. Lazy.

Frank is lucky not to be in the main credits otherwise he would be dead, redundant, and possibly Radzinsky's son.
the female ghost of tom joad: lost -> generaljanie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 01:03 pm (UTC)
Yeah, you're right about that. At least Frank doesn't have daddy issues! I guess he's too old for that, and lucky for him indeed. And he's too awesome to be Radzinsky's son. ;)
falafel_musings: ros/guilfalafel_musings on May 4th, 2009 08:42 pm (UTC)
I did once start writing a crack!fic of Widmores secret diary which featured him in a love triangle with Miss Hawking and Brother Campbell. I guess nothing is more crack than canon. It wouldn't surprise me if Charlie Hume = Charlie Pace. It could be Hawkings revenge on Desmond. She'll kidnap his baby, send it back in time 25 years, get the Pace family to adopt him, then Des has to deal with being responsible for his own son's death just like she was. And Charlie would have died in the act of getting his parents together so they can concieve him. Hey! At least Charlie's death would have a point at long last.
the female ghost of tom joad: loljanie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 12:57 pm (UTC)
LOL, THAT WAS AWESOME! If there's any chance you might finish it I'd JUMP on it like woah. LOL, it's too good to hear! See, I always say that Lost is a total cracky show when you take the angst cover away.

And your theory actually makes sense. Even if I hope as hell it does never happen because that'd be jumping ten sharks even if we're talking about Lost.

I totally agree with this... What a bad episode to have as number 100! It was enjoyable, but afterwards I literally sat down and realized how disappointing it was. The writers just don't seem to get what we want to see this season...
the female ghost of tom joadjanie_tangerine on May 4th, 2009 07:31 pm (UTC)
They just didn't get it. I think it's also because they write it before it airs and there's no feedback from the audience but whatever, it totally was disappointing for being #100.

I can only agree with everything you just said. Especially the fact that Dan's death was totally lame and not sad at all. I thought I would cry rivers of jears but actually didn't xD

Jeremy is a great actor and I hope seeing more of him!

Is is just me or is this season really going down a bit? Because all of this Dharma stuff is getting boring and for an 100th episode, this one wasn't shiny at all.
the female ghost of tom joad: lost faradayjanie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 12:56 pm (UTC)
I thought I'd have cried too, but I just couldn't. Lame. Lame. Lame. As lame as Shannon.

I hope too! Shit, I'll miss him so much.

And no, it isn't just you. Or at least, I really enjoyed it until 5x11 and then not so much, but whatever. I hope they have some trick up their sleeve.

the female ghost of tom joad: like seriously?janie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 12:54 pm (UTC)
Nope, it won't. I mean, it was clear since the beginning, but whatever. I really don't care either way, I'm just seeing what they end up doing. ;)

Aw, you're not weird! I just can't bring myself to give a damn about two character who have been there for ten episodes and then turn out to be crucial without having done a single thing to make me realize why should I give a damn. But it might be me, I guess that if I did care about Ellie I'd have liked the episode better. I just can't see the reason why I should. ;)
the awkward young shadow: neck pr0ngwape on May 4th, 2009 10:32 pm (UTC)
I don't think Richard wants to be THE guy in charge. He's really comfortable in the back pulling the strings, and the one at the top always has people gunning for them.

Oooooh shirtless!Jack. Yum.

I think Sawyer/Juliet is kinda gross. I hope they don't stay together.

Also did you notice that this Eloise was about a foot taller than the one we saw in '54? I couldn't take her seriously! All I kept wondering the whole time was how she got so tall so fast!
the female ghost of tom joad: lost -> generaljanie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 12:52 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I don't think he wants either. Pity because he'd do the job way better than everyone who tried until now. I love Richard so.

And yeah, shirtless!Jack -> highlight.

I really don't care either way if Sawyer and Juliet break up or not, but I guess I'm just not that invested.

And yeah, you're totally right! Argh, time traveling makes people have late grow spurts. ;)

as I read above, I do think 'lazy' pretty much covered this episode. it was a very disappointing 100th episode. I don't watch the promos, but my boss does and said it was advertise as a hell of a ride and.. not so much.

Richard being pretty is definitely a constant, not a variable ;)
the female ghost of tom joad: lost othersjanie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 12:50 pm (UTC)
Lazy is exactly the right word for it. I mean, 100? Really? I had seen the promo and it looked way better there. :/

LOL, AMEN TO RICHARD BRINGING THE CONSTANT PRETTY. ;)

I'm okay with Daniel being dead (sorry everyone who loves him!), I just really didn't like how it happened. I don't like the crappy life/ crappy death thing. I realize that Lost is an outstanding show 95% of the time, but this episode kind of puzzled me. It wasn't pointless, but...ah, I don't know.
Naked Jack and Pretty Richard, though. I totally agree with you on those.
the female ghost of tom joad: lost -> generaljanie_tangerine on May 5th, 2009 12:47 pm (UTC)
I'd have dealt better with it if they just gave him a decent way out. I mean, Daniel isn't my favorite character but I really liked him and thought he had potential. I can live with it, but dying that way was just pointless. And this episode was mostly disappointing IMHO. *sigh* At least we had the pretty! ;)
