.... this is sort-of-politics related. and sort of world cup related. Skip if not interested.
Okay. Just one thing. I always think that this country can't possibly get worse, and then it does. And I can't even rant because seven hours of Heidegger are enough for my patience. And I usually cut politics related post but this time I'd rather not.

This evening, I am watching a couple of newscasts on tv. In the least important one, they gave two piece of news.

The magic octopus predicting the World Cup results was aired before this small, insignificant piece of news which I'm sure everyone in this country could do without.

Best thing, though? Same thing in the main newscast. Actually, I don't think that they talked about news number two. And yesterday they said that at that demonstrations there were one hundred people.

Uhm. That's good information, isn't it? How am I not surprised that meanwhile this is going on, too?

I don't think I need any further comments. Also I'd really like to know if this happens also in other countries, but I suspect the answer would be no. Freedom of information/press, I'm sure that you're awesome, but I am starting to suspect that we never really knew each other that well.

That said, I'm off with Kant because I need to read something I actually understand and to see if I can whip something up for the luau because I already fell behind. Thank fuck my last final is on Monday and then I can stop cramming. /rant

it's like here, first news story will be that ray allen is staying a Celtic...and then comes the story about a HUGE fire two cities away where firefighters got hurt...it's like HELLO PRIORITIES
the female ghost of tom joad: ARE YOU SERIOUS?janie_tangerine on July 8th, 2010 08:33 pm (UTC)
HELLO PRIORITIES INDEED. =__='' yeah seriously, and I'm glad I didn't watch the news when they kicked Italy out of the World Cup or I'd have headdesked forever. :/
Anasnowweisz on July 8th, 2010 07:44 pm (UTC)
Definitely and absolutely does happen here.
I wish I could say it doesn't but yes it does.

Let me put it in perspective: Our country's biggest news show the one that airs in the grown up slot of 7 pm. It has a 20 minutes sports section (don't mistake this for actual sports. It's 20 minutes of football). A 15 minutes entertainment section (and don't mistake this for actual entertainment as in arts and culture oh no. It's idiot semi models, celebrity wannabees).
Then they have about 15 minutes of useless things that only stir up idiotic shit like OMG THIS POLITICIAN USED HIS OFFICIAL CAR TO GO TO A WEDDING BE OUTRAGED WAAAAAH or OMG THE USA ARMY WANTS TO HELP US FIGHT DRUG TRAFFIC ON THE COAST OMG AREN'T YOU OUTRAGED?

And the last 10 minutes are for actual things like idk, the fact that our telecomunications monopoly refuses to open up new connections for other companies and that their nation wide internet sucks and they didn't invest the money they borrowed from the state on upgrading it. Or that a whole 3rd of the country is in a yellow warning for storm season. Or that this week it was announced a cop in Costa Rica has to protect an average of 1000 people because that's how bad the lack of cops nationwide is.

lol this is the same reason why I hardly talk politics.
TL;DR: YES IT HAPPENS IN COSTA RICA TOO, IF I GIVE OUT EXAMPLES I'LL BE ENRAGED BY THE END.

PS: ilu

Augh, HOW DO I GET THE TWENTY MINUTES OF FOOTBALL. Or, well, here it's not twenty minutes but all the sport that gets talked about is that, so. :/ And oh dear seriously it sucks everywhere. Tho thanks, now I feel less alone at least. ;) And ah, rant politics at me all you want, I'm the poster girl for politics ranting. ;) ;) Also seriously your news sound exactly as sucky as ours, except that at times we get how to teach your dog good manners. And announcers have resigned for that, which imo is just sane. I mean.

LET'S BE ENRAGED TOGETHER. >:( *whips out appropriate icon*

It happens here too, and there is no such thing as freedom of the press, it might not be as obviously censored now, but it still is. And dumbed down, hence the stupid stories ahead of important events. It is so annoying, I think you're more than within your rights to rant about it. =)
the female ghost of tom joad: ARE YOU SERIOUS?janie_tangerine on July 8th, 2010 08:34 pm (UTC)
I'm starting to think that there isn't anywhere, too, but here it's getting ridiculous. Especially because re the earthquake everyone is sure that they're all fine and stuff when the situation is crap, but since people don't know they still vote that idiot that is my PM. :/ Ew, sorry for the other rant. ;)

You are wonderful - this without a trace of cynicism. Other than that, I don't know what to say.

♥ you're too nice to me but thanks. ;) And I don't know either. Or, well, maybe I know, but it'd take me three entries. So.. I'll just pass for now. :/

I am seriously disgusted about what happened on the news. And what happened to Aquila's people, because as usual, when people need their government to step in, the government tells them to fuck off and stop whining. Nice.

And to add insult to injury, the whole story has been re-tweeted like crazy on twitter, while it has been twisted or ignored on tv. Freedom of information, we have oh so very little.
the female ghost of tom joad: assbut!!!!!janie_tangerine on July 9th, 2010 07:14 pm (UTC)
, when people need their government to step in, the government tells them to fuck off and stop whining.

Exactly. And then on the news they apparently solved EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM THERE and everyone else not living there thinks they have and so people demonstrating come off as the whiners. /rants

And yeah, when twitter is the best place to go to get news it kind of means that we're fucked. And eee. We do, and in a short while we'll have even less of it. =__=''
hell on wheelsgalain_7 on July 9th, 2010 07:29 pm (UTC)
I came home today and I told my mom: "Have you seen what they did to those people from L'Aquila??"

And she said they showed a bit on the TV, but not much and she didn't know anything else, nor how things actually were! Of course I filled her in, but she's not computer-savvy, so she was totally ignorant of this.

And my dad has the courage to tell me that "there's plenty of freedom of information in Italy, thank you very much". Yeah, right.
the female ghost of tom joad: ARE YOU SERIOUS?janie_tangerine on July 10th, 2010 08:37 pm (UTC)
IKR? My dad actually works there so I kind of have first-hand news and it already pisses me off enough usually (how they give news about l'Aquila I mean), but like this? Seriously. Half of the people I know are sure that everything's dandy there. Yeaaaah. :///

I know really? And the problem is that the public tv is for the government (of course) and B. OWNS THE OTHER MAIN THREE so clearly which information we get? And if that wiretap thing passes we'll be living in 1984, I suspect. :// And ha, actually people from the US complained about the wiretap thing. And if things suck there, too... okay, can I laugh instead of committing harakiri? ;)

Yes, but I also know that Zapatero in person vouched for the nice little octopus and he apparently he's safe. People are crazy.

Ma pure a me. E tanta. E la cosa triste è che praticamente sta al governo da quando ho memoria, o almeno da quando avevo undici anni o giù di lì. NON LO REGGO PIU'. Ma davvero.

sadly shit like this happens more and more often in France since Sarkozy is president, and it's not getting better... the thing that worry me the most is that like 80% of the french media do now belong to people notoriously pro sarkosy, so you won't hear a thing about the gouvernment fuck ups... but yeah, i think the world cup is a perfect distraction in every country, ya know? who cares what new stupid law the politicians just voted? let's talk about football... yeah, right!
Thanks for posting this entry anyway, it's good to know how many peeps are disgusted by the way things are right now...
the female ghost of tom joad: assbut!!!!!janie_tangerine on July 13th, 2010 08:42 pm (UTC)
Ewww, I so don't envy you Sarkozy. (Even if I envy you France. Hi, you're talking with one that has a not-so-mild France obsession. XD) That said, ewww. I guess the only point we have on you is that at least it's not Sarkozy himself that owns media and stuff but yeah, I so see your point here.

i think the world cup is a perfect distraction in every country, ya know? who cares what new stupid law the politicians just voted? let's talk about football...

THIS. GOD, THIS. I HATE IT WHEN IT'S ALL ABOUT FOOTBALL instead of serious stuff. Which here is all year long apparently, but whatever. And ha, ranting about politics is in my top ten favorite occupations, all my pleasure. ;) ;)

What you posted and what all the comments thus far said is exactly why I do not bother watching the news. I will glance at CNN for 15 min. (Everything repeats in 15 min cycles over and over ad nauseum.)

I only look to see if someone has nuked someone else. Then I look outside to make sure my neighborhood is still there. Finally if I have internet connectivity I really just talk to friends from other countries to find out what is really going on.

Even here in the US where there is supposed "freedom of speech" the mews is censored and we only see what they want us to see about other countries. I get better news from Aljazeera, com.and I am serious about that.

Most of the things are so trivial, and designed to take our minds of the bigger situations like: where is our money going, why are taxes so high, why are people dying all over, when will we withdraw from Iraq?, what is being done about the poor and hungry masses around the world? What is being done about out environment globally?

They don't want us to ask those questions because answers require action and them to spend money that they would rather keep to themselves. It has been proven that 10% of the worlds population controls 90% of the world's wealth what's wrong with that picture?
