fic, Lost: take it in and hold your breath (Miles/Richard), PG13
Title: take it in and hold your breath
Pairing: Miles/Richard
Rating: PG13
Words: 846
Spoilers: up until the S6 finale.
Warnings: well, there's smoking going on, if it's one.
Summary: The first time Richard smoked a cigarette, he coughed for a good five minutes after bringing it to his lips twice.
A/N: originally written for bittersweet25 at the five acts exchange; the prompts were cigarette sharing and first times. Title stolen from Bon Jovi.

They live together, for the moment. Miles’s apartment in Encino was still there and still paid for, and Richard has money, and neither of them has anywhere or anyone else to go to.

The first time Richard smoked a cigarette, he coughed for a good five minutes after bringing it to his lips twice.

Miles had lightened one, calmly blew a thin line of smoke out of his mouth, and said told you so, it’s always like this the first time.

Richard had stared at him for some ten seconds before having another one.

By the fifth, he wasn’t coughing anymore.

Miles isn’t sure that he likes this new love of Richard’s for cigarettes. Sure, he won’t be the one protesting or preaching at Richard; hell, he has a couple each day himself. He survived the damned island, he’s pretty sure this won’t be what kills him. And since he smokes, he can’t exactly tell Richard that now that he’s not immortal anymore he can’t smoke without any danger.

Also, it’s not like Miles gives people pep talks about not doing stuff he does himself. He’s a lot of things, but not that kind of hypocrite, and so if Richard wants five cigarettes each day (he’s methodical in this; he always smokes the same quantity) Miles won’t be the one giving him hell for it. Hell, Richard has had an enough hard time adjusting to a world he never lived in, let the guy fucking have his vices.

The whole sharing thing beings one day when Miles has finished his packet and it’s Sunday and he really needs one, and so he asks Richard if he has one to spare when he reaches him as he blows smoke out of the window. Instead of just getting one, Richard hands him the one that he’s currently smoking. Miles takes a drag and hands it back. Richard takes another and hands it a second time.

Then one day they’re driving to New Mexico because James called and said his kid and ex-girlfriend-who-was-kind-enough-to-take-him-in on strictly friendly terms are out of town, he’s bored out of his mind, the house is free and he’d like to see a couple of known faces.

It’s not like either of them has anything to do, and so they get inside a rented car and Miles drives because Richard can’t and says he doesn’t exactly intend to learn.

Miles is smoking (yes, yes, it’s dangerous, he knows that) when Richard reaches down in his jacket and swears.

“What’s up?” Miles asks, and Richard shakes his head.

“I forgot the cigarettes.”

Miles hands him the one he was smoking, and until it’s finished they pass it between the two of them, smoke filling the car for a short while before one of them opens a window and lets it get out.

The motel they stop in isn’t that great but it doesn’t have cockroaches in their room or in the bathroom, so Miles figures he can do with it.

After they get some food from a diner, they’re back inside the room and Miles takes a cigarette out of his packet (the second-to-last); he takes a drag, then hands it wordlessly to Richard and when Richard sits next to him on his bed, Miles doesn’t say anything against it.

“Is there a reason why you like this so much?” Miles asks, genuinely curious, when he has a couple of drags left on the cigarette, and Richard as well. He hands it over and Richard takes it and puts it to his lips before answering.

“It’s not healthy,” he says.

Miles takes another drag and decides it’s not a sane answer.

“I spent two centuries on that island and I don’t think I ever had a vice all my life. You don’t know how good it feels,” Richard explains taking the cigarette again. Miles can see his point.

When he gets it back, he closes his lips carefully around it. He wonders if Richard left his taste in there, but he can’t tell.

The night after (another motel, the last cigarette from Miles’s packet in the ashtray on his nightstand, with a brand new packet Richard bought on the way next to it) he finds out that yes, the cigarette tasted like Richard, but just faintly. As his tongue meets Richard’s (they accidentally ended up too close while Miles was reaching to take that last cigarette from Richard) he definitely recognizes the taste, but it’s stronger and not dulled with anything. On the cigarette it almost felt recycled; now it isn’t, and Richard tastes half like nicotine and half like the burger they had one hour before. Not at all like someone who used to live on an island and didn’t have vices.

Miles thinks that he’s okay with it. And if Richard decides that he likes this particular vice, too (and Miles thinks he is, from the way his hands run along Miles’s hips and from the eagerness in the way he kisses), then Miles definitely wants in.

feeling: okayokay

OMG, I loved this. I am not a fan of smoking, but I gotta admit, the sharing thing was kinda hot and cute. I can totally picture them doing it. :P

I loved Richard's reason for smoking, and that he has exactly 5 every day. So Richard. And I like the slow progression of their relationship, and the accidental kissing at the end.

Eeeeee I love these two so much. :DD

P.S. Bon Joviiiiii!! <3

Thank you! :DD

Well, to be entirely honest, I hate smoking. I might find the whole thing sexy/romantic/very film noir in movies/shows, but in RL I can't stand it. But it was fun writing this one, and I could so see Richard getting addicted to it for some reason. I'm so glad that you liked it and that it was IC for you. :DD And heee, they're adorable, aren't they?

I agree, smoking IRL is a huge turn-off for me (I have asthma), but I can see the appeal in movies/fiction or whatever. And Miles strikes me as the smoking type anyway. I've seen other fic writers make him a smoker, and it always fits so well with his personality. And Richard, too, certainly needs his vices after such a long life of Doing The Right Thing. :P

I've seen Bon Jovi many many times in concert...and Jon looks sexy every year. ;D

Dude NOW I'M ENVIOUS. I've been trying to go see BJ for ages but they never show up in my goddamn country (Italy) and I never managed :(((( next year I'll just fly to Germany lol.

Lol it's totally a question of fictional appeal and total RL turn off, y/y? And yeah, I think that Miles has the skills for pulling smoking off. ;) Also ehe, Richard does need vices. Poor guy. XD

LOL you poor thing, deprived of our dear Jonny. They play here (New York) almost every year. Some years they even stop twice on the same tour (different venue). You haven't lived until you hear "Bad Medicine" live. :P
