SPN 6x20, the man who would be king
Okay, I haven't read reviews and I haven't even checked the FL because I didn't want accidental spoilers - I'll go back to your reactions asap.

1. BEN EDLUND.

YOU.

BROKE.

MY.

HEART.

But at least I think it isn't definitive? The end I mean. Hey, there's room for things to get fixed, RIGHT? RIGHT? NOTHING IS BROKEN FOR GOOD.

2. CASTIEL. OH MY GOD CASTIEL. YOU. YOU TRAGIC PERSON - FUCK I haven't felt for a tv character like this in ages. His face when he went back to Heaven. HIS FACE WHEN HE TOLD THE OTHER ANGELS THEY HAD FREE WILL AND HE WASN'T GOING TO LEAD THEM AND THEN ---- RAPHAEL FUCK YOU SO MUCH. HE DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO. ;__________;

3. Also lol did they use silent movies because you don't have to pay for the rights, at the beginning? Okay, on to more interesting things. Like.

4. BEN EDLUND YOU'RE A GENIUS. THE STRUCTURE OF THIS EP - GOD I LOVED THAT IT WAS CAS TALKING TO THE AUDIENCE, AT LEAST WE GOT IT FROM HIS SIDE.

And well - I mean - okay he's doing some seriously stupid shit but HE'S DOING IT FOR A GOOD STUPID REASON ;_________; ALSO HE'S ---- HE NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT BETRAYING DEAN/SAM/BOBBY ONCE. HE --- CAAAASSS. I mean he's in that stupid arrangement with Crowley and it's the only reason he's still kicking and he'd still break it if Crowley touched them - Jesus CAS. ;_________;

*cries*

5. Also aha, now Cas has brought both Winchesters out of Hell? Nice record. xD though this is going to cause so much wank, that he brought Sam back soulless. Between all my ;___; I didn't get if he brought Sam out because of Crowley or if he did it before - I think he did? In that case I guess he brought him back soulless because he couldn't put up a wall or anything, or I'm missing something?

6. ALSO.

LET'S TALK A SECOND ABOUT DEAN/CAS HERE.

BECAUSE.

THE FIRST STUPID THING CAS DID WHEN RAPHAEL KNOCKED HIM OUT WAS GOING TO DEAN.

AND HE DIDN'T SHOW HIMSELF BECAUSE HE THOUGHT DEAN DESERVED TO BE HAPPY AND APOCALYPSE-FREE.

SAY THAT IT'S NOT DEVOTION ;___________; OH CAS. ALSO DEAN SPENT HALF OF AN EPISODE NOT BELIEVING SAM AND BOBBY AND JUST STICKING FOR CAS. I JUST WISH HE HAD SAID ALL THAT NICE THINGS ABOUT CAS SACRIFICING HIMSELF FOR THEM ALL OVER BEFORE EPISODE 20 BUT DEEAAAAN. ALSO 'YOU WERE LIKE A BROTHER TO ME' *CRIES* SHOW WHY DO YOU HAVE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THESE THINGS JUST IN THE EPISODE WHERE THEY TRAP HIM INTO A RING OF FIRE.

ALSO.

CASTIEL PERCHED ON DEAN'S BED. EVEN AFTER THE RING OF FIRE. AND THE WAY THEY LOOKED AT EACH OTHER.

SHIP YOU MIGHT BE TEMPORARILY BROKEN BUT I'M SURE YOU'LL GET THROUGH THIS - OH YOU TWO, AND MY HEART, AND CASTIEL BEING LIKE 'I DID IT ALL FOR YOU' AGAIN -- THESE TWO.

Also when Cas stormed down and saved them and they had that conversation and it was clear that they were all lying but there was Cas half smiling at Dean and being like it's me I just - BEN EDLUND THANKS FOR TAKING MY HEART AND CRUSHING IT WHILE I WANTED TO CRAWL AROUND IN JOY. ;___;

7. Cas getting trapped in a ring of fire might have been the most painful thing I've seen in this show or closed to it. Still. HE STILL WARNED CROWLEY OFF EVEN AFTER THAT. CAS YOU LOVE THEM SO MUCH IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY - YOU DON'T DESERVE ANY OF THIS CRAP.

8. Also ooh Crowley I'll never not like you. Even if I loathe torture and I loathe that you appeared just when Cas was about to talk to Dean ;____; Also I like that Cas doesn't let Crowley have the best of him and that they're on even footing.

9. Seeing that scene in Heaven pretty much made Cas killing Rachel in 6x18 painful, in retrospective. But. I mean she was all happy when he was back and he was too and he had to kill her - SHOW CAN YOU MAKE ME FEEL MORE SAD FOR SOMEONE I DON'T EVEN KNOW.

10. I think I just can't get over how good Misha is. The Heaven scenes were just - he looked SO FREAKING HAPPY TO BE THERE AGAIN AT THE BEGINNING. AND NOW IT'S A BATTLEFIELD AND HE DOESN'T EVEN WANT TO GO TO WAR AND HE STILL DOES IT BECAUSE THEN AGAIN WHAT THE HECK DID HE FALL FOR IN S4/S5 (AND ALSO BECAUSE HE LOVES HIS WINCHESTERS, DON'T TELL ME OTHERWISE) AND WHEN RAPHAEL SLAMMED HIM BACK TO THAT GUY'S HEAVEN AND THERE WAS BLOOD ON HIS FACE - OH CASTIEL. ;_____________; YOU'RE TRAGIC ENOUGH FOR HONORARY WINCHESTER CLUB MEMBERSHIP.

(look at how coherent I am here. Yeaaaaah.)

11. I just can't also get over how Dean + Sam = his constant. Even if he's doing crappy things he still never put them in danger once. And by saving them he pretty much fucked himself because that's when they understood that he was lying but ------ CASTIEEEEL. He loves them so much. He just had very bad ideas about how to deal with them. ;__;

12. Also Dean, darling, you say now that he should have talked to you, but considering how you two interacted this season and you calling just for Sam-related matters, and considering that you're talking with a socially/emotionally stunted ANGEL (and you should be happy enough that he DOES have a sense of wrong/right still), you can't exactly blame him for not being all sharing and caring. STILL DAMMIT PLEASE YOU TWO, KISS AND MAKE UP OR JUST MAKE UP IDEK YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR FOR THIS TO BREAK YOU. ;___;

13. Raphael, please die. Suffering. All I have to say on that.

14. Misha, you're so good I can't even start to list all the ways. His voice. The way he acts. THE WAY HE LOOKS AT PEOPLE. THE WAY HE GOES FROM BAMF TO TOTALLY HURT FACE. MISHA YOU'RE GOOD. PLEASE STICK AROUND. AND CAS DO SOMETHING SELFLESS (for the umpteenth time) SO THAT ALL CAN BE RIGHT WITHIN THE WORLD AGAIN. PROBABLY. YEAH.

15. Jesus this has to be the more incoherent review I ever done for a SPN episode and it's taking me more time to write it than it took to watch the entire thing. BUT I HAVE FEELINGS. AS MANY AS I HAD WITH THE RAPTURE, OR CLOSE TO IT. (Then again I had had time to think that episode through before reviewing back then, right now I'm mostly an incoherent mess.)

16. In conclusion: show I love you, Ben Edlund I love you but please fix this, Cas I love you but fix yourself and stop doing stupid things, Dean congratulations on saying everything too late and just when you're in a situation where you have to but I still love you and please forgive the poor angel, he did it all for you, Sam I do get your point so I can't be angry with you because everyone has a point in here I guess (yay for grey zone!) and Crowley I still like you. As a villain.

17. Also random, but for Italian people, doesn't the entrance to Hell look like it was just out of Dylan Dog in the glorious times where they actually showed you Hell? If anyone around here reads it, 'course.

18. IN CONCLUSION: THIS EPISODE, IT GETS A 10/10. ALSO, CASTIEL I'M NEVER TURNING MY BACK ON YOU, CHARACTER-WISE. ALSO, YOUR FACE. I'LL ICON IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

And now I'll stop capslocking and check my FL, maybe. Because it'll do good to make me go less like FEEEELINGS. /doubts it

LOL. Lots of incoherency on my end, too, but to attempt to answer your question on bringing Sam back -- he said it was the first thing he did, before even going to heaven. He brought him back but his pride blinded him to the fact that he brought him back wrong. And so he didn't catch the clue when Sam looked at Dean through the window and walked away. In retrospect, he said that should have tipped him off.

mmh you're right about that - I was probably being too OMGOMGOMG FLAIL to hear stuff correctly. (I'll re-watch, SOON.) Though to be honest I had just assumed that he'd have brought Sam back soulless because of the damage - then again if he had done it first thing before going back to Heaven then it'd mean that he really did just a mistake because Sam's soul couldn't have been THAT damaged -

Meaning that HE'S STILL FEELING GUILTY ABOUT THAT and why he was so happy about Sam getting resouled?

Nice realization to have randomly, self. Now I'm feeling like hugging the guy even more, er.

I pretty well spent all of this episode flailing about too. Omg. AMAZINGEST EVER. I didn't want it to eeeeeeend. This ep is, like, my absolute FAVOURITE kind of angst. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

I KNOW? THIS EPISODE - I JUST - THE ANGST - CASTIEEL. ;___; my love for that character is apparently going towards insane.

I actually got very close to tears during this ep. Just...god. Epicness. Loved it.

Kudos for having a coherent review post. I watched it, was broken, and loaded the episode and went to hit play again... and I just couldn't. Couldn't make it happen. Watching this was like being in physical pain, and I still have nothing coherent, because Castiel makes me want to sob my eyes out and scratch at my laptop screen.

SHIP YOU MIGHT BE TEMPORARILY BROKEN BUT I'M SURE YOU'LL GET THROUGH THIS

If Castiel dies, or - god fucking forbid - if Dean kills him (wtf, show, how could you even put in that scene, JESUS, my heart O_o), I am not going to ever be able to watch this show again.

-cries-

I wouldn't really call this coherent, but thanks anyway. ;) can't blame you though. CASTIEEEEL. ;____________;

I wouldn't put too much stress over that part. Maybe it was just Dean pushing it - considering everything else he said, I really don't think they'd ever go there. I mean, apart from Dean being not half as mad as I feared and being all like we can start all over, he also said you're like a brother to me. Which well, saying that in Deanspeak would be pretty much I LOVE YOU in capital letters. And considering Dean's track record with Sam I really don't think that he could ever go there even if he said he would. And not after Dean has finally acknowledged that Cas has been coming through for them for years by now - in my head Dean said that just to push Cas to stop the whole thing with Crowley, I don't buy that he means it. :(
twisting_vine_x: Dean/Cas - Don't Ever Changetwisting_vine_x on May 7th, 2011 01:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I'm gonna cling to everything you've said here. That scene just gutted me, and while I do think Dean was just pushing, still... the whole thing freaks me the hell out.

he also said you're like a brother to me. Which well, saying that in Deanspeak would be pretty much I LOVE YOU in capital letters.

There is that. :D

Gah... I'm gonna cling to that tiny happy thought, and hope it gives me good dreams, to help me soothe my broken heart.

Agreed with pretty much everything you said, but this:

Cas getting trapped in a ring of fire might have been the most painful thing I've seen in this show

A thousand times this. This scene broke my heart, crushed it, then shredded it. And Castiel's expression when he realized what was going on. *cries*

I'm still not over it. I need all of them to do a long group hug because nothing else could cancel the horribleness of it ;_____________________________________________; CAS POOR YOU. HIS FACE. HIS FACE. AND IF I THINK HE GAVE HIMSELF AWAY WITH THAT SUPERMAN REFERENCE AND HE LOOKED SO HAPPY TO HAVE GOTTEN IT RIGHT FOR ONCE - ARGH. *cries all over again*

Re: I understand Ben Edlund's needs and support all his life decisions.
IT SO DOES MAKE SENSE NOW, and my poor heart can't really take it, but I'm okay with it because I agree with your subject line here 100%. ;____; THOSE TWOOO. I just can't help hurting for them too and for their emotionally stunted selves - TALK ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS MORE OFTEN.

God I could stare at that gif forever.

I tried to write a coherent review earlier but I gave up because I couldn't find the words to express the sheer amount of awesome that happened on my televesion screen. You summed it up perfectly: IN CONCLUSION: THIS EPISODE, IT GETS A 10/10. Edlund is clearly a god. Well Edlund and Misha, credit where credit's due. :D

The scene where Cas looked all pleased with himself making the superman reference without realizing he was shooting himself in the foot actually made me whimper. HIS FACE. He looked so happy and they just knew.

I can't wait to see how this plays out. The previews looked awesome.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural castiel 3.0janie_tangerine on May 8th, 2011 08:59 am (UTC)
OH DEAR THAT SCENE WAS THE WORST. Or well, not exactly that but that was the point where you could hear my heart breaking because GOD HIS FACE HE LOOKED SO PLEASED WITH HIMSELF WHEN HE HAD JUST GIVEN HIMSELF OUT OH CAS YOU. Can I just wrap him in a blanket and hug him or something?

The preview does look awesome, but I'm not totally displeased that it's airing two weeks from now - at least I have time to recover from THIS.

Also jesus Misha is so good I can't even comprehend it.
Giulia: Spn_Case0wyn on May 8th, 2011 10:25 am (UTC)

But at least I think it isn't definitive? The end I mean. Hey, there's room for things to get fixed, RIGHT? RIGHT? NOTHING IS BROKEN FOR GOOD.

Ci deve essere. CI DEVE, OK?

ALSO 'YOU WERE LIKE A BROTHER TO ME' *CRIES* SHOW WHY DO YOU HAVE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THESE THINGS JUST IN THE EPISODE WHERE THEY TRAP HIM INTO A RING OF FIRE.

Già ;_____; Che crudeltà, neanche il tempo di "darci" qualcosa che subito ce lo tolgono *sigh*

Also Dean, darling, you say now that he should have talked to you, but considering how you two interacted this season and you calling just for Sam-related matters, and considering that you're talking with a socially/emotionally stunted ANGEL (and you should be happy enough that he DOES have a sense of wrong/right still), you can't exactly blame him for not being all sharing and caring.

Applauso a scena aperta.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural castiel 3.0janie_tangerine on May 8th, 2011 01:09 pm (UTC)
XD

Nah penso che Crowley non c'entrasse niente anche io, quello è stato un momento di 'oddio non capisco più niente' nel mezzo di cotanta sofferenza ;__; e oddio ESATTAMENTE QUELLO ;___; IL MIO CUORE ;____;

Lol, grazie. Sorry ma doveva essere detta, per quanto secondo me Dean l'ha presa molto meglio di quanto credevo - ero convinta che sarebbe stato senza appello e invece l'appello c'è stato, voglio essere ottimista ;___;
Maria: Castielvasiliki on May 8th, 2011 12:59 pm (UTC)
You were certainly a lot more coherent than I was in my reaction post, that I was typing while watching!

You asked about Sam. Well, Castiel brought Sam back right after he healed Dean and resurected Bobby. He said that they had averted the Apocalypse but at a terrible price (i.e. Sam), so he tried to make things right. My baby descended in the Cage with 2 archangels who wanted to tear him apart, ALL ALONE (no other angels for back up) and BY HIS OWN CHOICE (no orders from God), and he barely succeeded to get Sam out. ;_; So, when Sam didn't even thank Cas for risking his life to raise him, but asked instead if Cas brought him back soul-less on purpose, my heart broke as much as Castiel's in that scene! (and what an acting show by Misha!!!)

HE STILL WARNED CROWLEY OFF EVEN AFTER THAT. CAS YOU LOVE THEM SO MUCH IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY - YOU DON'T DESERVE ANY OF THIS CRAP.

This! This so much! ;_;

And although I love Edlund ("The End" is one of my all time fav episodes), I can't understand why he wrote Sam and Dean being judgemental, instead of giving Cas ALTERNATIVES - after all, that's what family is for! Angel-proofing the house at the end was so harsh! (although, how could BOBBY of all people have done an error drawing the sigils, huh?) And Cas still trying to make Dean understand, even after they left him in the holy fire circle with the Hordes of Hell coming! ;_;
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural castiel 3.0janie_tangerine on May 8th, 2011 01:15 pm (UTC)
Oh dear you're the second person telling me that this looks coherent. Considering that I thought it was everything but.. XD maybe I should have more faith in my coherency. ;)

Nah I got that thing about the soul later, I was just wondering if Cas had insisted on not bringing back Sam's soul in early S6 because he knew it was a lost cause, but then I put the pieces together and realized that it was a mistake and that he did it on his own and then I realized that he probably feels guilty about that too and OMG CAS ;____________________; SAM SHOULDN'T HAVE ASKED THAT ;_________________;

He so doesn't deserve that :__;

Well, to be entirely honest I'll give Dean the benefit of the doubt here - I was sure that the ring of fire thing would have ended in a totally horrible break-up without any other chance of redeeming it. I still think that considering his whole behavior this season telling Cas that he was there was kinda hypocritical - but at least Dean was the only one giving him the benefit of the doubt, and in the end I think he'd have forgotten about it if Cas had accepted to stop doing what he was doing. He didn't get what Cas was saying but he didn't even know the backstory to the extent we do, so I'll see what happens in the finale before writing him off as 100% judgmental. (And he sort of did give Cas an alternative, though he didn't say anything specific - but I'll back my FL on saying that Dean telling him to stop was the sign Cas was asking for at the end of it). I'm way less okay with Sam and Bobby, especially since each one of them has been working with Crowley before - now if Cas does it is horrible but when they were doing it wasn't? I need Balthazar to slap sense into them, lolol.

Doesn't change that I need a Cas-centric group hug ;________;
Maria: Castielvasiliki on May 8th, 2011 01:56 pm (UTC)
I haven't written Dean off, I'm sure he'll come around and forgive Cas at the end, otherwise the show writers would have to deal with lower ratings next season. But I think the boys were "judgmental" in the sense Sam said how they could trust Cas now, when in fact Cas had saved their asses in that very house a few hours ago (so yeah, they COULD still trust him to save their asses),
and all three were telling him he shouldn't have made a deal with Crowley, when in fact they had all worked with, or for, Crowley (or other demons) in the past! So, Castiel teaming up with Crowley to avert the Apocalypse (i.e. defend the Winchesters' cause in the only way he knew) wasn't a big deal. They could skip that part, and go straight to the REAL problem: more monsters like Eve being in Purgatory.

Only when Cas realizes there's another kind of danger in Purgatory and he's NOT strong enough to deal with it, he'll stop saying "I know what I'm doing" and "it's not broken and doesn't need fixing". I believe he's just started realizing this after he encountered Eve, in front of whom was totally powerless!!! So, if the boys had offered Cas an alternative way to bring Raphael down, he'd give up on his deal with Crowley. I hope it's what happens in the finale!

Unfortunately, I don't think that Dean telling him to stop was Cas' sign. :/ I think Cas received no sign from God, which is why the end of the episode with him hanging his head down was so bleak.
A.: pretty castielvella_amor_dm on May 9th, 2011 11:44 am (UTC)
MY HEART HURTS SO MUCH OMG CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS. SOMEONE FIX IT. FIX IT NOW. I CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE HURT :(((((

also, re 5. i think he brought Sam back for Dean, to try and make it all better for him because Dean was GUTTTED... only Cas was a bit overconfident and stuffed it up. oops :/ (although one of my friends (goldenusagi) pointed out that it doesn't make sense that Cas managed to go in an get Sam out of the Cage that was supposed to trap archangels -_-)
