birthdays + omg a real entry!! (plus TV talking)
1. Happy late birthday to jaydblu! :D I hope you had an amazing day and that next year brings awesome/nice things all the way. ♥

2. So, classes have started which is why I've been scarce. Thankfully this round I actually give a shit about four classes on four rather than one on three, so maybe this semester won't be the complete drag that last semester was. Also none of my current teachers is an idiot, which is definitely a plus. Now I just need to get through a will-be-not-nice session at the university office if they have to bitch about what I need to put on my study plan. Hopefully I won't end up on the newspaper for strangling the employees. (Also, in my university the office supposed to deal with students is now open TWICE each week, three hours each, and none of these is in the afternoon. At times I think I should have done university abroad entirely.)

3. TV talking under the cut! Or well, what TV I've seen that isn't the vampire porn or SPN. Also: the bit about H50 isn't exactly flattering and there's talking of possibly triggering subjects.

a) Ringer: .... seriously? It's established that the one reason I watch this show is Nestor Carbonell's eyelashes, but it's becoming the for-laughs show of the moment. Until Chuck comes back at least. It's just so involuntarily funny that I can't help it. It's totally ridiculous that no one has even suspect that it's Bridget posing as Siobhan and that for someone to find out, SHE had to go tell her. Considering all the red herrings that she's throwing around. Not to mention that the more Bridget acts on things the more I have to wonder how the heck she can keep the act up, considering that she's doing DUMB STUFF EVERY TEN SECONDS.. Also: while I don't take this show anywhere near seriously to actually give a damn about what happens, I'm starting to have problems with Bridget's attitude regarding her sponsor guy. Sorry, but first she clues him in, then they agree to run, then she bails out on him WITH A VOICE MAIL, then he doesn't call you back, then YOU LEAVE HIM ANOTHER VOICE MAIL and poof, apparently she has better things to think about? While she KNOWS that there's a dangerous guy after her that might actually KNOW? Well, audience knows since we saw what's going on, but seriously, I'm baffled that she isn't even trying to track him down harder. So: for now the eyelashes are enough to hold my interest, but either this becomes good or it's getting dropped first when I need to drop something.

b) H50: what the hell was last episode? The first fifteen minutes could do, the rest... what. Seriously - the premiere was exactly the usual style, and the second ep wasn't as good but it was enjoyable/delivered the ridiculous fun and the pretty, but this one? Seriously? First: what the fuck is going on with Kono? I'd hope that she's undercover, but if she is it was written horribly and having Chin seemingly being the only one giving a shit is a problem. Second: that whole speech along the lines of 'dead guy was a SEAL and he was a real man so he couldn't possibly have killed himself!' rubbed me in ways that were all wrong. About that: it totally doesn't put into account that veterans/soldiers actually DO kill themselves, and it gives this idea that only supposedly weak people kill themselves, or that being a tough soldier means that you're somehow above killing yourself. Which... sorry but that seems out of the first part of Full Metal Jacket. And I don't have to like it one bit - suicide is a serious thing, you might want to tackle the subject with more delicacy. But apart from that, the biggest wtf was that scene at the end. I don't know what I was supposed to feel about watching SEALs shoot people in what looked like a shady operation at best, but I felt mostly disturbed and not at all comfortable with it. Not being from the US I don't even feel okay going into specifics in here, but: I don't appreciate that kind of scene put in a context where only two people in that entire room (Danny/Lori) looked not exactly hyped, and I don't appreciate when it's implied that I should cheer/be glad to see that. At this point it makes me forego stuff which is totally OOC writing (IE Steve going ballistic and Danny having marriage related bitching at this point), or Max having the potential to be more than comic relief. That stated: I watch this show because of the pretty, because of the team dynamic and because in spite of being unrealistic it had great character writing and I never asked for it to be the new Six Feet Under. But geez, last season in that episode with Adam Beach they actually did it right/decent. Summary: the one thing that I liked in this episode was Danny snarking about the Beatles, plus the total Lost homage at the beginning (and the traps in the jungle). It isn't a compliment. Really, show, get your shit together and do right what you were doing right. I'm not at the levels of anger I was during Heroes S3 aka the one time I quit a show, but seriously. Show. Get. Your. Shit. Together.

c) Boardwalk Empire: observation that is possibly good and sad at the same time: the last fifteen minutes of BE episode two were better than all the Ringer ones and the three H50 ones aired this season put together. I guess that it's not a compliment for those other two, but whatever. Being strictly about BE: I like that they aren't having a Bunch Of Things Happening In The First Two Episodes but rather a couple important ones happening each ep - I like the pacing a lot. 2x01 was a pretty good opener - it also confirmed that Van Alden is the kind of character I'll never like because he's a lousy hypocrite. It also confirmed that I still don't know whether I like Jimmy or whether I want to slap him. Everything needs more Richard, but I'm loving Chalky's parts. The prison stuff in 2x02 was probably my favorite out of the entire two eps yet, but I also like that Nucky isn't unchallenged and that he has people turning on him. Spices things up. (Technically speaking I loved the montage of him talking to the black people about punishing the KKK and then saying the contrary to the white people - yeah, I like shows that make you see how dirty politics can get.) Also: Margaret is awesome and she'll outsmart everyone. The ending of episode two was glorious, in that sense. I still don't know what I think of the Irish/UK people introduced in ep. two but we'll see. Chalky keeps on being my favorite part of the entire thing but really, every minute of this show is worth entire episodes of others. Also because it's actually accurate and when it makes me want to throw up (IE that scene in ep 1 with the KKK going for Chalky's place) it does it a) justifying a scene's presence in said episode, b) no one actually present in that scene is doing the running commentary for me. Now just have Margaret start running things in the household for real.

4. Meanwhile, out of utter curiosity (and because it was short) I went and downloaded/watched New Amsterdam. What's sad: the eight episodes of that show are better than half of the new shows I checked out. *facepalm* It was lovely. And I obviously need to catch up with things either till airing or wrapped up, not things that were canceled without an ending ages ago.

5. I signed up for mini_wrimo again, in hopes that during November I manage to finish stuff. Last year it was awesome and being forced to write daily is a good thing, so I'll give it another go. One of these years I'll do the regular Nanowrimo again but it'll be when I'm done with classes forever.

6. Sadly, the exciting news are done for now. But hey, why not a meme? Stolen from elliotsmelliot and mollivanders: give me a book/show/movie and I'll answer with:

+ Favorite episode(s)
+ Favourite character(s)
+ Favorite villain(s)

My f-list is making me seriously glad that I missed out on Ringer. Which is sad, really, because it has such an interesting premise and Nestor and Ioan are very nice to look at, so why is this show not amazing?

Just when I said I was going to get into H50, I miss two straight episodes, but again, maybe that's good? It seems like no one's been too happy with them. I did catch the end of the last one, where Kono was being naughty and I couldn't decide if I did not want or if this could make for some nice angst. Then I remembered that I wanted to watch H50 for the bright colors and beach/jungle scenery and the fun action sequences. Angst, GTFO.

I say SPN for the meme, because I'm predictble and even though I can probably guess most of the answers. ;D

Ringer is... well, if I had time issues and too many shows, I'd drop it. It's a pity because the actors are all good, but it's just too ridiculous for me to give it the benefit of the doubt. Nestor is lovely, at least.

Well, I'd still say watch S1 and the premiere XD S1 was pretty straightforward and had pretty and awesome stuff and great character writing, for that kind of show at least. The problem with Kono in the new season is that they're writing it without giving it half a background and without explaining why the hell she's doing that. If she's undercover okay, but if she isn't it'd be.. kinda OOC. And the last episode was all kinds of not good. :/// I'd skip that one altogether while catching up. And yeah that's exactly the reasons I watch that, so.. yeah.

And suuure!

The Rapture. TEARS ON MY FACE. The first SPN episode to legitimately make me weep. And it's only happened twice after that, lol. Damn you, Misha Collins. It's all your fault.

To be honest, after seeing 7.01, I can roll with Castiel's 6.22 character development better now. Now he just needs to come back and I don't even give a fuck about a redemption arc, cause Dean should just be so damn relieved that he's alive that he won't even give him hell. He'll just give him the trench coat back and they'll hug and and and...
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural dean/cas s7janie_tangerine on October 6th, 2011 09:58 pm (UTC)

Actually I'd be okay with the development either but I'm reserving judgment until he comes back. BECAUSE HE TOTALLY COMES BACK AND DEAN STARES AT HIM AND GIVES HIM THE COAT - ACTUALLY DEAN HELPS HIM PUT IT ON - AND THEY HUG AND STUFF Mostly I'm having a moment of Being Pissed At People In This Fandom Who Don't Like Cas and it has put me on the defensive. But if not for that I'm totes okay with it.

IT REALLY IS. MISHAAA. JIMMYYYYYYY. *explodes* (On that subject: I know you're probably busy, but if you have some spare time over the weekend, do you wanna give that fic one more look? You totally don't have to say yes -- hopefully it doesn't need much more done to it, but I guess I could use a second opinion, if you're up for it. If not, no worries! You've already helped me out so much. ♥)

I know what you mean. Sometimes I don't understand this fandom. I know everyone has different opinions, but the Cas-haters are so...hateful. He made a mistake, so obviously he deserves to die. He betrayed the Winchesters, and this is ~~a show about two brothers~~, blah blah blah, because Sam and Dean are flawless human beings who have never made a mistake. It makes me want to throw things. But whatever, haters gonna hate. I will defend Cas to the death. :D
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural dean/castiel 3.0janie_tangerine on October 7th, 2011 08:30 am (UTC)
MY DARLINGS. <33 (sure thing, go ahead! I have nothing planned for the week-end unless you count studying and re-doing notes and generally not so exciting stuff so go ahead and hit me with it. ♥)

Blah. I know? Also now the other Great Thing that non-Cas fans say is that wait, 'THE SHOW IS ALL BEAUTIFUL AND SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS AGAIN BECAUSE IT'S ALL SAM AND DEAN AND NOTHING HURTS, but wait, those people who still give a shit about Cas? SO PATHETIC.' (and in one case I've read vomit-inducing.) Which is like - geez, I LIKE the show, I LIKE what's happening, but telling me that I'm pathetic because Cas is my favorite forever tempts me to dislike things in retrospective. And I don't want to do it. So I'm just ignoring people. But yeah WHAT YOU SAID. I love Sam and Dean but geez, they're not special snowflakes. And if anyone goes like Cas BETRAYED them I just want to rant at them (it's more complicated, hm?), Idk I just feel like people haven't watched 6x20. Or if they did they don't give a shit. And this attitude = I do not like. But yeah, haters or not I'm on team Cas forever, end of story. ;)

And yes indeed!

+ Favorite episode(s): The Birthday Party (2x15, if I'm remembering the name wrong). Dark!Stefan + Damon and Alaric declaring officially that they're bffs = my life is complete.
+ Favourite character(s): Damon, Bonnie, Alaric, Caroline. But I like everyone except Klaus and Katherine.
+ Favorite villain(s): is Elijah a villain? No? Mh, okay, Stefan when he's in ripper mode.
+ Favorite Ship(s): Damon/Alaric, Stefan/Elena. I like Caroline/Tyler/Matt in any combination. And I like Bonnie/Jeremy too.
+ Favorite growth arcs: Caroline, hands down. Best Growth Arc Ever. And Damon, even if he's like, one step forward and three back, but we can hope.
+ Best portrayal overall: mmmh actually I'd go for Elena because it has to be one of the few shows I've seen with a female lead that I can appreciate 100% and who acts her age and is pretty mature at the same time.
+ Favorite quote: 'you can't deny it, we were badass.' ♥

Team Badass RULES! I shall reply with a picture.

2x15 was definitely a dream episode for Damon/Alaric shippers ;).

My uni's latest accomplishment: in Poland, when you have good grades, you get a sort of a scholarship (uni pays you some extra money and doesn't even ask what you do with it). I study English right now, and last year my grades were good enough for me to apply for the scholarship, but I also have a BA in history. And guess what? I can't apply. Because I have a BA in history. I feel like I'm being punished for being too ambitious.

HI TEAM BADASS. <333333 and hehe I know? I spent that episode being like '... SOMEONE IN THE WRITING TEAM LOVES ME'. ;)

................... oh dear that sounds exactly like the same kind of stuff that goes on here. Like, you can apply for scholarships, but you can't apply if you're already running for another. Not that the scolarship we gets are enough to cover at least the taxes, but one would think that at least if you have good grades you'd get them, right?
falafel_musings: lostcharliefalafel_musings on October 6th, 2011 09:12 pm (UTC)
I'm going to say Lost just cos I'm curious to hear your favourite ep and quote answers. Hmmm. Mini-Nano sounds interesting. I might look into that myself, cos I've too much work to commit to big scary real Nano.
the female ghost of tom joad: lost -> generaljanie_tangerine on October 6th, 2011 09:52 pm (UTC)
Mini-Nano is awesome! You pick a number of words from 100 on and write something each day. It's a really good exercise and you don't have to commit for crazy amounts of writing. :)

+ Favorite episode(s): Deus Ex Machina, mostly because it's the only one where we actually saw what Boone could have done if they just hadn't killed him. Sigh. After that I'd go with Exodus, The Constant, Solitary and the S2 finale.
+ Favourite character(s): Boone! ♥ Sayid and Desmond after. And Danielle, because she is underappreciated.
+ Favorite villain(s): haha good question. Jacob? I don't even know if he was a villain, but I couldn't stand any of the supposed villains at most given points..
+ Favorite Ship(s): Jack/Boone forever.
+ Favorite growth arcs: Shannon had a great one. I'll stick with Jack, too, because with all the issues he had he was still the one character who was consistent with himself through the end.
+ Best portrayal overall: in S1/2/before S5/6 I'd have said Sayid. Early S1 I might have said Locke. Overall and in retrospective I think I'm going with Charlie.
+ Favorite quote: DID THEY TEACH YOU HOW TO PREDICT THE WEATHER AT A BOX COMPANY? ;) though anything that Charlie said when they shot down the polar bear is a close second.
falafel_musingsfalafel_musings on October 6th, 2011 10:17 pm (UTC)
That sounds like a really good idea! Even just committing to 100 words per day would be good to keep me focused. Maybe I'll sign up for 500 and see how I get on. Thanks for the rec.

I'm kinda glad I didn't see Sayid's later portrayal (and death) but I loved Sayid in the early seasons too and Naveen was always one of the most compelling actors. As much as critics rave about Emerson and Terry I always loved Naveen. And Dom of course.
the female ghost of tom joad: asoiaf >> team you know nothingjanie_tangerine on October 6th, 2011 10:28 pm (UTC)
It is! It's a pretty great exercise. I went for 400 which was what I did last year, but 500 seems totally doable too.

Ugh, post S4 Sayid was... saying bad wouldn't cover it. S5 I could have done with, but S6 was just the epitome of ridiculous. But I really liked the idea of the character and I liked what they did with it (until then), and that they didn't skim with the possibly uncomfortable stuff related to it. And Naveen played it so very well. Emerson and TOQ are great, but I just found Sayid a lot more compelling as a character. And Dom at least had a character that died before they started with the OOC writing, so I don't have later season marring the whole portrayal.

I've only watched BTVS casually. I'm thinking that if I had actually followed it maybe I'd give them more credit (also SMG is good with what she has), but since I'm in there just for the eyelashes, unless it gets better fast I'm not sure I can buy it much longer. :(

IDEK until the S2 premiere it was all awesome, but that last episode did everything wrong. Like, if they wanted to make me headdesk and dislike it, they did it to the letter. :// I really hope it's new season adjustments, because S1 was just... good. And that episode wasn't. Not one I'll re-watch anytime soon or ever.

+ Favorite episode(s): err I can't say the titles because I never bothered to learn them, but 1x06 - I think, the one where they're dealing with the former soldier with PTSD, and then 1x20 because it's like, sunshine and rainbows and awesome all around.
+ Favourite character(s): Danny ♥. As soon as he went like 'PIZZAS DON'T HAVE PINEAPPLE AND BTW NEW JERSEY IS AWESOME' I was like okay, sold. But I like everyone in the team.
+ Favorite villain(s): errrr this would probably spoil you. You'll find out who the guy is mid-season. ;)
+ Favorite Ship(s): Steve/Danny. As if.
+ Favorite growth arcs: errr oh dear if I have to take S2 into account I'll say Chin because he's the most consistent. XD
+ Best portrayal overall: I'll go with Kono.
+ Favorite quote: the one in my icon. Oh, and at some point Danny and Steve have a carargument and Danny is like 'NJ IS AWESOME BECAUSE OF SPRINGSTEEN AND BON JOVI' which I can't remember exactly, but that one too.

+ Favorite episode(s)/book. I think it's A Storm of Swords even if THAT thing happened.
+ Favourite character(s): Robb, Brienne.
+ Favorite villain(s): if Tywin was supposed to be a villain, I'll go with him.
+ Favorite Ship(s): Jaime/Brienne. I'll take Sandor/Sansa and Jon/Sam too.
+ Favorite growth arcs: not going into specifics because of ADWD spoilers, Theon.
+ Best portrayal overall: I'll stick with Brienne.

Hey there!
First of all, THANK YOU for what you said about H50 and that ending with the seals.. It's very complicate to have a real defined opinion on this stuff, not being american it's so out of my cultural environment that i just don't dare to say anything most of the time, but... They are murdering people without any form of trial or justice, and it's kinda glorified? Made me really inconfortable...
Second, Boardwalk Empire is glorious and i love every minute of it. Chalky is the best thing ever, like Omar was the best thing in The Wire, wich i guess says a lot about this actor (sorry mate i can't remember your name tho...) AND I WANT MORE RICHARD!!!
And finally, YAY MEME!! Can't help myself, i HAVE to ask you about SIRENS! XDDD

Ugh, I know? I do realize that it's not my country, but it doesn't mean that I have to a) agree with the US's foreign policy most of the time and b) cheer when I see people murdered without a trial or even asking questions. I don't even care that they sold drugs or whatever, I just can't feel like OH YAY AWESOME! I don't even like it when the military is glorified period (which is why I was pissed about the handling of the suicide matter), but that bit was just... bleah.

OMAR WAS GLORIOUS TOO :DDDD I LOVE THAT ACTOR SO MUCH. And Chalky is totally flawless, or at least as flawless as it gets in that show. ;) and hee MORE RICHARD YES, possibly staring at Jimmy and vice-versa...
