supernatural 7x03 'the girl next door'
1. I only have a couple of things to say about this.

This is one:

I mean, seriously? Show, it's very nice, so very nice, that you finally acknowledge what I've been saying for a year, but apart from that, eeeh. Okay, in order.

2. I actually liked this a lot until the end. It also taught me for good that SPN writers = uber trolls, because after last week's cliffhanger I wasn't expecting them to escape that hospital in like the first five minutes, but then again if they had actually STAYED there it'd have been a goddamn problem.

Also, a leg doesn't take three weeks to heal from a fracture like that, and any place where they didn't sedate Dean before setting the leg would have been sued for malpractice in RL, but whatever, I'll suspend belief as usual. XD

3. TINY!SAM!! <333 Colin Ford is good, dammit. And I kind of loved his little love story there. And when he like beat up all the thugs on his own. Gooo Sam. I also liked Amy - it's actually nice to see some not-so-black-and-white MOTWs.

4. And here we get to the Do Not Like, which was sadly enough to shadow the Do Like, and there was a lot of it until the last three minutes.

Meaning: WHAT WAS THAT ENDING. Let's say that I buy that he's quietly gone off the rails while doing his repressing business (even if it be the same as admitting that I had an idea of Cas going darkside before 6x19, which was totally not given, or at least not clearly) and he kills her even if he hasn't done a thing like that since S2. But what makes me go like OOC is that the WAY he did it was... stupid. I do realize that it'd have been nasty, but leaving the kid alive when HE HAS JUST KILLED HIS MOTHER aka the person who made sure that he got fed with dead things and didn't have to go kill others? He can be off the rails, but if there's one thing that Dean would never do is do such a stupid thing while on a job. Of all the not so good things Dean can be (including that he never puts himself on others's shoes, or when he does it, it's not as often as he should), dumb when it comes to dealing with monsters is NOT one of them. He's not an idiot as a general rule unless we're counting that he still thinks that repressing shit is going to work and that he's emotionally constipated, but leaving the kid alive in that situation was stupid considering that he has a) just showed the kid that Not Behaving Like a Monster gains you nothing, b) took away from him the person who made sure he didn't kill people or ate living people, c) took for granted that 'I have a place to go' thing. That isn't even an answer - maybe the kid goes with another bunch of relatives who have no quibbles about eating people and it all goes to hell. I don't even get it. Which is what is giving me the wtf vibes. I don't doubt that he's capable of doing a 100% reprehensible thing like that, but the means felt completely off. If they have to go there, I want to buy it. I already had enough problems with buying how they went from 6x20 to 6x22, I don't need to have them all over again.

And yes, that was harsh but it totally ended up being a bummer for the entire thing. The fact that they're acknowledging that Dean is Beatrix Kiddo totally made me go OMG OMG FLAIL OMG FLAIL, but it doesn't change that I can't really buy that scene 100%.

I should probably rant on me wishing that in the last three seasons this show hadn't forgotten that John Winchester post-Matt Cohen wasn't a 100% bastard with absolutely no redeeming quality (he had one - look at how he died), but that's for another time.

5. That said, Jensen looked so very lovely. And he's pretty damn good at directing. He should do it more often than one ep each season. And I appreciated that speech of Sam's where he went and told Dean to just deal with the fact that normal isn't his thing. Literally. I just hope he never finds out that Dean killed Amy. Blah. And I was thinking that we were done with the mistrust and the both of them keeping stuff from each other.

7. In short: I seriously hope that next episode happens something that makes me buy the last scene, I do love that Dean is Beatrix IN CANON, BECAUSE THAT'S CANON AND END OF STORY, and I'd have liked it and I get the point but I don't like how they're doing it. But Jensen should def. direct more. Also, cheesy Leviathan effects were cheesy, but OMG WHUT THOSE THINGS ARE SMART and they're actually tracking aliases down? Geez. They're in for a ride, aren't they.

8. Now I can hope that the Leviathans kidnap Sam and try to kill Dean, Dean survives against all odds, he gets himself a Hattori Hanzo sword which CAN OBVIOUSLY KILL ANYONE, Bobby teaches him the five fingers exploding technique or how the heck it was named, I can't recall at the moment, which OBVIOUSLY WORKS FOR ALL THE MONSTERS, and then he meets boss!Leviathan who's wearing Cas's body. And then suddenly Cas resurfaces and he's like DEAN JUST DO IT BECAUSE YOU CAN KILL THIS IF I AM IN CONTROL and there's a very teary scene and Dean thinks he killed Cas, then Cas wakes up again because Dean only killed the Leviathans, Sam is fine and TFW is back again. Yes, I just mishmashed everything with Kill Bill and yes, Tarantino would probably shoot me since it defies the entire point of that movie. WHATEVER. Obviously the black-haired leviathan is Budd and dr. Sexy!Leviathan is Elle Driver.

9. Sorry, I guess that all the Kill Bill stuff obviously made me forget everything else.

I have been lurking, lying in wait for you to post. And I agree with it all -- the quick-healing bone stuff, the Dean-shoulda-killed-that-kid stuff, the beautiful-Jensen stuff . . . all of it. (And I especially love #8.)

Your visual of the SPN/Kill Bill connection is THE MOST PERFECT THING EVER. Thank you!!!! &hearts&hearts&hearts&hearts

*sighs happily* It was beautiful, wasn't it?

Jensen should def. direct more. SO MUCH THIS.

Lol it took me more than usual because a) I have classes in the mornings (TRAVESTY) and I had to come up with that photoshopped thing but clearly I had to cap the KB stuff, but much glad that it was worth the wait. ;)

(I'm so seriously tempted to write eight. The Tarantino worshipper in me says that if I did it I'd totally miss the point of the movie itself, but eeee. IT'S BEEN NAGGING AT ME.)

And heeee no problem! :D I've been blathering about the SPN/Kill Bill thing since that part in S6 where the truth goddess was telling Dean that he was a killer bee regardless of how many barbecues he could cook, but seeing that SO BLATANTLY VALIDATED... I had to do the graphic. ;)

That bit was glorious.

I know? It just reeked of doing it half-assed, and the one thing I will never buy about Dean is that he goes on a hunt half-assed. End of story. Not killing the kid was idiotic, from that side (not that I wanted the poor thing dead, lol) and damn, if you kill his mom and then DON'T KILL HIM you just don't let it go like that. I get what they wanted to do but... really, no. Just no. I also think it was more Dean projecting his paranoia on that poor girl, but yeah idek. I'm not even not disliking this season as a whole until now (most of my issues are with Sera's PR skills and with people who can't stop complaining because people miss Cas - just don't do that, okay) but I just hope that the writing isn't all like this. :/

... you kind of aren't, I was expecting Japanese people to turn out from somewhere O__O obviously it wasn't even one of those strange S6 things when they got Asian monsters in the US because things were getting mixed up since Amy had been there for ages. :| Maybe it's just a name that they give to all fox spirits? But yeah, it was off.

Lol RIGHT. DEAN IT DOESN'T TAKE THAT LITTLE TO HEAL THAT KIND OF FRACTURE. Well, considering how bad Sam had hurt his head he should have been out of commission for a while too...

Yeah he should be like OMG BRAIN DAMAGE by this point.

Wait I explained it wrong. XD I'm complaining about category of fans A who are all like 'OMG SHOW IS AWESOME AGAIN' and say that category B (aka people who actually like Cas) should stop being pathetic because he's not in there anymore, mostly because the basic idea is 'since we're back to the Sam and Dean and once in a while Bobby show things are all sunshine and rainbows and UGH DNW'. I really don't mind Cas being supposedly dead right now (I'll mind if he's really dead because that was a pretty crappy way to go, but I have time until May), but I mind that someone tells me that I'm pathetic because he's my favorite character and I like it better when he's around. I mean, I've read that 'some Castiel fans are seriously vomit-inducing' and... really? My favorite not being Sam or Dean doesn't make me less of a fan and I get that impression whenever I read that kind of thing. :(

I definitely agree with you re: John. I mean, since when did he have a drinking problem? It seems like the show has definitely vilified John way more since he's been dead, which I don't really get, but whatever... :/

Yes, Jensen was lovely :) And excellent at the directing too :)

Dean not killing the kid...hmmmm. You definitely raise a good point and one that's been bothering me. I thought Dean killing the monster made sense for him...he's always seen monsters as black-and-white evil, and killed them as such. I'd hoped he'd moved on from that but maybe not. And the whole "people can't change" thing...thinking that monsters will always kill no matter what. But...the kid. That's definitely a valid point. I guess they just didn't want to show Dean stabbing some random kid, but when you think about it, that IS sloppy plot-wise. Hmmmm. I don't like it.

Loved reading your thoughts as usual! :)

It seems like the show has definitely vilified John way more since he's been dead

THIS. At least someone else agrees with me here. ;) Just, idk and I don't get it. I'm not going to argue that John was a crappy dad and that Bobby is a better parent to them in the strict sense, but from them to imply that he had a drinking problem so bad that he actually beat Sam up? HOW? That's not... I don't even get it. You can't argue that he loved his sons since oh wait he actually made a deal with the demon he swore to kill TO SAVE DEAN, and they could have said it ages ago if he was that kind of bad. (Also I can't buy that Dean would have ever liked his dad that much if that ever happened). Idk. :/

Jensen gets better with age or something? He's delicious.

Someone on another post said that Dean is more like 'you kill humans, you die, you don't then I give you a chance', which totally makes sense, and I can totally see him killing Amy, but what I can't buy is that he did a job half-assed. Now I do realize that seeing the lead kill a kid isn't something that can fly, as fucked up as the lead gets (and it's not like I WANT that kid toast, poor thing XD), but leaving him alive means more problems than he solves and the one thing I'll never buy re Dean is that he'd not think rationally when hunts are involved. :/ I get what they're doing but the means need working on. ;)

Yeah, you're right. That line about John's drinking really came out of nowhere...and Dean would definitely not have been such a "blind follower" of John had John hurt Sam. Totally random and I don't really get it :( Poor dead John, lol.

Jensen definitely gets better with age ;) :)

Agree on the means re: Dean not killing the kid. Really, that whole plot was kind of sloppy (I mean did the kid really have to be RIGHT there in the doorway?). Meh. They definitely could have handled that better.
the female ghost of tom joad: uma fanficjanie_tangerine on October 9th, 2011 09:11 am (UTC)
I know? It was so odd. I can't buy that Dean wouldn't have just taken Sam and run if it came to THAT. One would think that considering how he died at least they'd be a tad more fair to him..

Indeed. *licks lips*

Yeah it felt as if they had no idea what they were doing even if I understood what they meant to imply. :/
The Cleaverage: dean/caskel_reiley on October 8th, 2011 11:32 pm (UTC)
1. HAH! I was soooooooo thinking of Kill Bill there, too! Oh yeah. Still mad at Dean for that, though.

2. I KNOW! I srsly thought the whole ep was going to be Dean trying to bust out of the hospital while Sam was getting himself locked up with the crazies. Glad Bobby showed up when he did and all... but talk about your misleading trailers.

And a break like that... yeah. No. For almost ANY break, 6 weeks minimum, and for that one? 2 months AT LEAST. He, like, didn't even limp!

3. I love it when they show them as kids. Especially Sam. (Sadly, I haven't really liked the actors they've had playing young Dean.) His "Dean... how do you talk to girls?" was adorbs.

4. Even though I KNEW Dean was going to go and kill her, I still really hated him for it. However... I can see him leaving the kid alive. Maybe he didn't actually believe the bit about the kid, so he wasn't expecting the kid to show up...? But Dean's always had a soft spot for kids, even monster kids - remember the shapeshifter baby? And Jesse?

What he did was absolutely stupid, yes, but I don't think it's totally OOC. It's... a regression of his character, sure. Like... will he never learn this lesson? EVER? At this point, I think if that kid came back to kill Dean, he'd probably let him.

5. He should definitely direct more.

7. I hope they are also back to being hunted by the government, now that they're back in the system (sort of), b/c I LOVED when they were on the run from the law!

the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural dean/cas s7janie_tangerine on October 9th, 2011 09:49 am (UTC)
1. It was like so plain obvious, I can't believe it wasn't on purpose.

2. That was a retcon if I've ever seen one, y/y? I had totally been expecting something different.

Also Dean is obviously Batman for real...

3. Tiny!Sam is ADORABLE. :DDDDDD OMG :DDD I liked the one who played Dean in the Christmas ep, but seriously OMG <33

4. That was a regression, but... I can't find it a well-written regression. If he's gone totally off the rails, or enough to have forgotten that he usually doesn't kill monsters that aren't dangerous anymore (Leonore anyone?) then he's off the rails enough to kill the kid, too. If he isn't off the rails enough then he wouldn't have killed her without even blinking and when he had swore to Sam that they were done with secrets. Maybe he has a death wish, but the kid won't be around to kill him for a while so.. that doesn't work either. Idk I always found that when Dean goes dark/batshit insane he's usually more rational and less caring about emotions (IE when he was torturing Alastair), so I just can't see why he'd leave the kid alive when it means kicking a can of worms open instead of keeping it closed. :/ I could have bought it if they had given him a better dialogue but as it was it just didn't make sense to me from any point.

7. Omg that'd be awesome! Even if ugh, HENRIKSEN I MISS YOUR FACE.

8. ... I really kinda want to do it. Obviously Bobby has to be Pai Mei. Without needing to die. ;)
The Cleaverage: dean/caskel_reiley on October 9th, 2011 06:23 pm (UTC)
1. HAD to be deliberate

2. Blue and I think there's something fishy about Bobby... we have theories. Not sayin' in case it doesn't pan out, though.

I've broken my elbow twice. The 1st time I only had a soft cast for maybe a month and a sling for the rest of the summer. But the 2nd time I had a full hard cast for, like, 3 months. His leg was WAY worse.

4. I think they wanted to leave that open for a reason... to come back and haunt him later. It could have been written better, but that's my theory.

5. YES. He wasn't in the last one JA directed, either, was he?

8. DO IT. DO IT.

2. Lol it took me two weeks to walk properly again when I SPRAINED my ankle without even breaking it, he couldn't have possibly healed in three weeks when he broke the whole leg..

5. Sadly no. :((( HAS TO HAPPEN.

8. ... damn, I guess that I just need to find myself an O' Ren. Vernita can be skipped on the basis of point one. The problem is that all the villains I actually liked except Crowley are dead and Crowley wouldn't work. I liked O' Ren dammit, I can't use Meg. XD *thinks about it*

Also, a leg doesn't take three weeks to heal from a fracture like that

I know! As someone who has broken quite a few bones, I was wincing the whole time Dean was limping around.

I totally agree with your thoughts about Dean. He can be pretty dumb about a lot of things, but he's smart when it comes to things that go bump in the night.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural castiel 5.0janie_tangerine on October 9th, 2011 08:55 am (UTC)
Lol I was like 'hey, when I SPRAINED my ankle it took two weeks to heal, how can Dean be okay in three when he BROKE A LEG LIKE THAT?'. Like, people, research. Please.

Idk that was just so sloppy that he really has to be this close to losing it altogether, and they didn't give enough signals that he's about to flip and go insane. :/ I just can't buy that.
ozmissage: SPN. Sam. lead me to the truth and iozmissage on October 10th, 2011 04:03 pm (UTC)
Word on all of this. I was really into the ep until the end and then I got annoyed because they were giving me "Heart" flashbacks only this was way, way worse because Amy didn't/wouldn't have chosen that. And leaving the kid alive was both dumb and cruel. I just...UGH. I don't know what to say about any of that nonsense.

Colin Ford is such a gifted young actor though. He plays Sam so well. And I really dig Jensen's directing style, it's a little artsy, but in a good way.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural samjanie_tangerine on October 10th, 2011 04:08 pm (UTC)
bleah at least Heart was less ethically questionable. But apart from the ethically questionable, they wrote something I figured Dean COULD do so badly that I couldn't buy it from any angle. That was plain bad writing, I can't even go into character fault. :/ Srsly whoever wrote this needs a) a S1 marathon, b) a S2 marathon, c) to re-watch On The Head of a Pin ten times, because if they wanted Dean to go darkside they did it wrong. :/

But yeah the rest was good. Colin Ford is seriously awesome. And has Jared's mannerism down pat, it's scary O_o and I totally dig Jensen's directing, too! He should totally do it more.

(Still catching up on the f-list!)

COLIN FORD FTW. That kid is amazing.

I also liked Amy - it's actually nice to see some not-so-black-and-white MOTWs.

Agreed! With all the apocalyptic business as of late, gray MOTWs have been harder to come by and it was refreshing to see that again.

but leaving the kid alive in that situation was stupid considering that he has a) just showed the kid that Not Behaving Like a Monster gains you nothing, b) took away from him the person who made sure he didn't kill people or ate living people, c) took for granted that 'I have a place to go' thing.

ALL OF THIS. The whole damn scene made no sense. The episode was perfect otherwise and they leave that big ol' turd at the end. It still isn't sitting well with me.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural dean sam genjanie_tangerine on October 15th, 2011 07:24 pm (UTC)
I KNOW? HE NEEDS AWARDS. He's seriously so good.

YES. I like gray MOTWs, dammit. I like them a lot more than the regular ones, lol.

I KNOW. Thinking back about it... I could have SEEN that happening, but the way it was written was so completely idiotic that I can't even. It was such OOC writing, I wanted to cry. Leaving the kid alive was just the cherry on top of nonsense. :///
