SPN 8x19 + some other things
1. First thing, quick fic rec for anyone who might be interested (idk how many on here are into both, but it's so brilliant I have to share): this is an ASOIAF/Father Ted crossover where Stannis, Renly and Robert are priests living on Craggy Island and it's the most beautiful crossover that ever crossovered in every history of crossovers. Seriously. You don't have to be familiar with Father Ted to crack up, though if you are it's funnier. Okay, there it is. You won't regret it.

2. That said, I SAID I WAS GOING TO DO EPISODE REACTIONS AGAIN and I'm doing it. Okay, SPN time since no vampire porn this week.

a) So, I've seen a bunch of complaining about continuity errors/plot holes in this. While I'll agree that Sam finding Bobby in three seconds when it took Cas forty years to track Dean was ridiculous... well, this show has been dealing with plot holes/bad continuity since forever, so by now I don't even mind anymore and other than that I quite liked everything, so whatever. I'll deal.

b) BOBBY WAS BACK THANK FUCK. I'd have liked it better if they had resurrected him tbh, since I always thought that killing him off was the worst idea Sera Gamble had after the Cas mess in S7, but at least we had a decent conclusion and we saw him again and ;_____;

c) Did I say I love Dean this season? Because I love Dean this season. So much.

d) Also: CROWLEY CAN I KEEP YOU FOREVER. Naomi... not. Damn please don't tell me she gets into Dean's head that Cas doesn't care about him because I can't do this all over again. I trust that they won't make us suffer through S6/7 again, but PLEASE NO NAOMI. I CAN'T. She's obviously trying to make it so that Dean distrusts Cas since obviously she can't get hold of Cas anymore, and... nopedonotlikeitonebit.

e) Also, as someone on tumblr wisely pointed out: if the ship was warded against demons and Crowley didn't know where Kevin was, how could he be in Kevin's head? Two cents that it's Naomi or some other angel.

e) On that: okay, really, show, please I beg you bring Benny back next year, yes? While I'm nowhere near the same level of attachment I had for Balthazar (DDDDD:) I liked the dude, he actually was a good friend to Dean which as far as I'm concerned is enough to give you a pass for everything and tbh I really, REALLY liked that for once they had a genuinely good dude who also happens to be a vampire. This show lacks in sympathetic supernatural beings, or used to anyway, and I just - I really REALLY liked that he and Dean were friends okay? BENNY'S FACE WHEN DEAN CALLED DDDD: I just - I'm having ridiculous friendshippy feelings with those two and I want them being bros and hang around with Sam actually approving of it and and and please show can I have it? D: also: this episode is totally and utterly convincing me that Benny owes a lot to Joshua from Fevre Dream - I thought it first because YOU KNOW VAMPIRE PIRATES ON BOATS IN LOUISIANA in Citizen Fang, but the more I look at it the more it seems like a) he's the basic same kind of person, b) he and Dean have a Joshua/Abner-like friendship.

(on that topic: the moment I'm done with the damned 8x17 coda I'm writing some epic ridiculously crack thing where Benny and Balthazar meet up in purgatory and become friends with benefits and then when Dean goes to spring Benny out Balthazar goes too and there's teary reunions and everyone lives in the bunker and Benny and Balthazar spend time commiserating on how ridiculous their respective bffs are. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who'd ever read that, but I don't even care.)

f) I liked the taxi driver D: obviously the moment I decided that, he had to be toast, did he.

h) I didn't particularly like Bobby being all like WTF DEAN AND VAMPIRES BEING BFFS tho - okay I get it but jesus come on Dean's had exactly ONE friend in his entire life and that was Cas and tbh I don't think that their relationship can be defied as purely friendship anymore ALL THINGS CONSIDERED like come on Cas is into boyfriend or platonic relationship territory by now, so CAN YOU JUST ALL LET DEAN PICK THE PEOPLE HE WANTS TO HANG OUT WITH D: I want Dean to have all the bffs that he can handle, especially if they don't fuck him over.

i) If anything CAN WE KEEP KEVIN TOO PLEASE. Also: Dean cooking for Kevin was all kinds of adorable and I can't with Dean this season.

l) In conclusion: they could have used a bit more continuity checking, but I thought it was a good episode and I'm veryvery excited to see what happens next :D except that please I don't want Naomi fucking with anyone's head anymore all right? Then again the GOT effect is still on since I feel ridiculously optimistic about everything, so good, please let me keep it. I'm just sad that there's ANOTHER hiatus now D: can we just get to the juicy part? Because the three spoilers I know are so very tasty and I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS OKAY.</spoilers>

3. Two GRRM-related things: seriously. IS THERE SOMEONE WHO READS WILD CARDS other than me in the universe? Seriously, I spent Easter reading throughout books sixteen and seventeen and it's just - so many delish characters and I have at least four otps TWO OF WHICH ARE CANON AND CURRENTLY LIVING HAPPILY EVER AFTER and while it does have the asoiaf realism/angst (as much as superhero books can have) CHARACTERS ACTUALLY GET TO BE HAPPY MOST TIMES even if they get through hell first, and there's canon queer/interractial/interspecies relationships and okay while some parts are seriously WTF or tacky or irrationally gross as a whole IT'S REALLY REALLY GOOD D: and I can't find fic or a fandom or ANYTHING except a forum that is updated every two months, whyyyyy.

4. Second GRRM-related thing: if I have any Theon fans on here who are on tumblr but we don't follow each other, me and a friend on there will hopefully be hosting a week of ridiculous Theon fangirling in mid-May because seriously the hate on the guy is pretty horrible atm and it'll just get worse as the season progresses so if anyone's interested, we'd love to have you. ;)

5. In other news: I spent Easter between despairing over my grandmother (whom I love but the more time passes the more I'm convinced that she'll never understand that life doesn't equate obligatory valley of tears) and feeling like some old person because my ten year-old cousin spent like half an hour speaking about how in his class people get caught for hiding their i-pods in their shoes, can't use their cellphones or *i-pads* in class etcetera etcetera. At which my basic reactions were: 'WHY would you buy your ten year-old an iphone or an ipad or ANYTHING LIKE THAT' and 'fuck when I was ten we didn't even bring our frigging *walkman* to school and we didn't spend time during classes playing Angry Birds'. Which probably explains a lot of things, but still, I'm too young to feel like an old woman and wish that kids these days would just go and read Treasure Island under their desk instead of playing Angry Birds, if they really have to not pay attention.

... damn, I sound like my grandmothers used to sound when I was seven. Brb, getting drunk.

6. I also had a sort of half-high school reunion. Half in the sense that just half of the people were present, and most of them were people I never talked to. But for some miracle it actually went decently, we got nicely buzzed (even if the beer I had was good enough to keep me awake until 4 AM even if the entire thing was over at 2...) and idek, apparently it took five years to get past the stage where people forget how much they used to dislike each other in HS but it was nicer than I thought it'd be.

That said, I'm also apparently too old to get buzzed and then go to bed at five AM because the morning after I woke up at like 11.30 AM and I wanted to spend the entire day in bed.

7. The politics around here are getting so depressing that I can't even fathom it. Not any news, but still, when you think you can't get worse IT GETS WORSE.

8. At least, I found a recipe for strawberry muffins which works like a charm. Now if only I had a chance to use said muffins to charm the Richard Madden lookalike haunting my university who appears in there once every two years or so, my life would be awesome. Again: why don't I know how to flirt? Because I'd have done that three months ago, if I had.

9. In more interesting book-related news, I'm three chapters into Fifty Shames of Earl Gray and it was deliciously hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes on, because if the rest is as good as the first three chapters, it's going to be the funniest thing I've read in ages.

10. Aaand since I have nothing else of import, I'll just leave you with this, which is arguably the best piece of live music that I've heard in the last six months that wasn't a concert I was attending. You're welcome. ;)

Ikr? at least my cousin has it going for him that he doesn't think that they should use them in class, but jfc seriously? I can't. (also hiding your ipod in your *boots*? What happened to the old 'stuff shit under the desk'? XD

She's obviously trying to make it so that Dean distrusts Cas since obviously she can't get hold of Cas anymore, and... nopedonotlikeitonebit.

I suspect that Naomi will do whatever it takes to get her way, to get the angel tablet back, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if she manipulates Dean into tracking down Cas for her -- after all, she and the angels can't seem to find him, so yeah, get the human to do it. It sounds like exactly the sneaky, underhanded type of thing she'd do. "I told you you could trust me," indeed. (Then again, Dean doesn't seem to be ready to trust any angels right now, so . . .)

at least we had a decent conclusion and we saw him again and ;_____;

Look at it this way: Bobby's OUT OF HELL, up in heaven being cranky, getting pedicures, and probably causing a ruckus. Go, Bobby! ;)

Benny owes a lot to Joshua from Fevre Dream - I thought it first because YOU KNOW VAMPIRE PIRATES ON BOATS IN LOUISIANA in Citizen Fang, but the more I look at it the more it seems like a) he's the basic same kind of person, b) he and Dean have a Joshua/Abner-like friendship.

O_O Wow. Wow. JANIE, I LOVE THIS. I can definitely see Dean as grumpy old Abner. And now I'm wondering if Benny managed to create his own "special serum" so that he might survive without taking lives. It did appear that he spent his time away from Dean not eating people.

Because the three spoilers I know are so very tasty and I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS OKAY.

Don't tease, woman. Which three spoilers? (PM or email me?)

7. The politics around here are getting so depressing that I can't even fathom it. Not any news, but still, when you think you can't get worse IT GETS WORSE.

Alas, the international-based news over here has been preoccupied with N. Korea threatening to nuke the U.S. (major wtfuckery there), so I haven't heard much about the elections in Italy . . . what happened?

wish that kids these days would just go and read Treasure Island under their desk instead of playing Angry Birds, if they really have to not pay attention.

Yeah, but reading is soooo hard, don'tcha know? XD

Yeah I suspect the same, but I just really hope that Dean is smarter than that. I think he is, tbh, also because they already did the 'they don't trust each other and it ends badly thing', so I think it's gonna turn out different. ;) still, STOP MESSING WITH PEOPLE NAOMI, I like straight villains better :(((

OH YES TOTALLY, I'm happy that he's probably hanging up with Rufus in Heaven. ;) and I'm really just glad we saw him again at all :D

I KNOW RIGHT? I was totally counting on you to agree with me on that since you're like the only person I know who read that book but COME ON Dean is the refined-ish version of Abner and Benny is totally the slightly-less-noble version of Joshua AREN'T THEY? I'd totally read the fic where Benny creates the serum tbh. (Or where he visits Dean's grave one hundred years later - SELF STOP IT DON'T GIVE YOURSELF FEELINGSSSS)

Also I'm PM-ing you in a moment ;)

Okay, last time we were at an impasse because left-ish people won't ally themselves with B, the FUCK POLITICS people won't ally with the left and B. is gloating because he's still number two party. Now the commissions that the president of the Republic called to at least come up with SOME SORT OF PROGRAM aren't seeming to accomplish shit, the left-ish people are seriously considering talking to B., FUCK POLITICS senators are all huddled in the country with their leader and without journalists having some kind of super secret convention and meanwhile it's been a month and a half since the elections and still no government *facepalm* I want to quit this country.

Yeah, but at least play Angry Birds when you go home, right? XD

he's probably hanging up with Rufus in Heaven. ;)

LOL, the Hunter Odd Couple in Heaven. Lovingly snarking at each other for all eternity. Oh, how happy that image makes me. \o/

you're like the only person I know who read that book

Yeah, and you're one of the two people I know who've read it. One of the best vampire novels ever written -- EVER -- but hardly anyone has heard of it. Man, that's just WRONG. Everyone must be off playing Angry Birds instead. ;)

where he visits Dean's grave one hundred years later

;___; That scene broke me when it was "just" about Abner and Joshua. Turning the characters into Dean and Benny is killing me. *cries*

the left-ish people are seriously considering talking to B.

Yikes. Are the left-ish people not familiar with the concept of "deals with the devil"? Or have they just been on another planet while B. was in office?

Checking the PMs now . . .

Ikrrrrrr Odd Couple in heaven ftw! I really hope they're there all bickering ;___;

I know it's a travesty that everyone knows about Twilight but NO ONE READ THAT BOOK D: it's so good! Why can't everyone who's into game of thrones track down at least that one? D:

... I think I might even be considering writing it and trying to dissuade myself at the same time because as you put it, that part killed me once already, NO NEED TO MAKE IT WORSE right. ;___;

No, the thing is that if they don't play nice with B there's no government and we have to go voting again, and if it happens it's 100% sure that they lose and there's a good 80% of chances that B. wins -____- I mean, when this is the scenario I suppose they're trying to find out the least painful way to go at it. Still, it's just fucking depressing -_-

Do it. Doooooo it. DOOO EEEET. If anyone (aside from GRRM) can do that scene justice, it's you.

if they don't play nice with B there's no government and we have to go voting again, and if it happens it's 100% sure that they lose and there's a good 80% of chances that B. wins

Yikes. Just dress B. in a white suit, stick him in a rose garden, dress up the people of Italy as future!Dean, and we're done here.

"Whatever choices you make, whatever details you alter, we will always end up—here. I win. So, I win."

I don't mean to make light of the political situation, but that's absolutely the first thing that came to mind. :( Ole B. has definitely sold his soul somewhere along the line . . .

No no you're perfectly right, actually my mom is convinced that he sold his soul to the devil.. except that he's been around since the late eighties wreaking havoc, DEALS WITH THE DEVIL HAVE A TIMELINE DON'T THEY? Shouldn't he have done his ten/twenty years by now? DDDD:

100% agreement on everything SPN - yes, it had continuity errors, but it wasn't enough to interfere with my veiwing and/or enjoyment of the episode, so, largely, I can move past it. (And 10000000% agreement on keeping Kevin and Crowley, and getting Benny back). Also, I will eagerly be awaiting your Benny and Balthazaar coda, because that combo can only be amazing.

Yeah same - or better, I'd be bothered if it wasn't a known issue XD I like it better when there aren't glaring continuity errors but if there are I usually just shrug and go on since it's no news. And other than that I really enjoyed it, so :D now I just really hope we can keep the people I want XD and lol at some point I decided that it's a travesty that Benny & Balthazar never met because between the snark, the accents and commiserating over their bffs not having fessed up yet IT WOULD BE GLORIOUS, so I decided that I'm hitching them up and that's it ;)
i feel the madness creeping in: SPN_Team_Free_Willaadarshinah on April 6th, 2013 10:14 pm (UTC)
I really would have liked to have seen so much more of what happened in Purgatory - I mean, if you can get to the exit in 1 day or so from where Sam appeared, Dean must have spent MONTHS just looking for Cas, either alone or with Benny, and that would have been so interesting to see on screen, at least for an episode or two. As more than a flashback, at least.

And angels. I'd have liked to have seen the dead angels in Purgatory. I guess you could make an arguement that, since they were never ensouled, they would never wind up there, whereas the monsters who do once had souls, but still. Balthazaar and Benny would be great - or both of them and Gabriel!

(On a side note, what do you think of the theory that's floating around that Gabe might have something to do with the video game-esque episode that's coming up in a few weeks? Because no one ever stays dead on SPN, not even angels, and the writers have know how much we all love him...)
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural team free will #2janie_tangerine on April 6th, 2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
Yeah me too, I think they should/could have had a lot more of it D: and yeah exactly omg I can't even take the idea that Dean looked for Cas for so much time - MY SHIPPER HEART ;______; also I suppose that he must have looked for a while with Benny or they wouldn't have been that tight when they got out.

Yeah me too D: I suppose that it'd have been hard to do since the actors may not be available and all, and since they don't have a soul it's highly probable that they go nowhere, but then again if monsters have a soul and go to Purgatory I can hereby decide that angels go there too until I'm proved wrong. ;) also omg putting Gabriel into the mix might be lethal XDDDD

(Mmmh I don't know if Gabriel has to do with the video game especially, but I read on tumblr that RSJ was seen around on set so it could be? I'm interested in how a possible return of his could work with them introducing the only other character I'm spoiled about - I don't know if you're in the loop/if you don't want to be specifically spoiled so I'm being vague. I don't know if it matches with filming time though, so I'm not sure about the video game episode, since.. well, it could reasonably have to do with said spoiler character from what I know. But it's a perfectly reasonable theory even if it's Gabriel somehow resurrected ;) )
i feel the madness creeping in: SPN_Castiel_Wingsaadarshinah on April 6th, 2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
Gabe makes everything better. Most the time. Sometimes the gratuitous Sam/Gabe is just, well, gratuitous, and that's usually how it winds up when Gabe plays a large part in most fics. Le sigh.

I just got back from boot camp last week, so I've been out of the loop for a couple months, so I'm not really sure. It would be AMAZING if Gabriel comes back/has a part in that episode, but I'll survive (somehow) if he doesn't. Though he and Charlie could be another lethal mixture.... ::ponders ponderously::

But you're right, Benny and Dean must have looked together for months before they finally found Cas. Their bromance is one that truly should've been explored further by the writers.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural castiel wingsjanie_tangerine on April 6th, 2013 10:39 pm (UTC)
Oh he totally generally does. XDDD siiigh I hope they bring him back indeed. THOUGH I'D LIKE BALTHAZAR BACK TOO AT THIS POINT. (Sorry, I just really REALLY liked Balthazar damn it, damn him and damn his accent.)

That thing about RSJ being on set was around on tumblr like last week, but it was without source so I have no idea if it was a fake or not - I hope it's not though. :D this season they seemed to have understood that killing ALL supporting characters is bad so we can hope?

Siigh I wanted more of that too actually. And more Purgatory. I was into this bromance thing a lot D: especially when.. well I usually tend to ship it when they're close friends but with those two I was just like OMG THEIR FRIENDSHIP IS SO *PURE* AND BEAUTIFUL AND I WANT THEM TO BE BROS FOREVER so idk it was nice to just friendship it. XDD I can only hope that next year Benny comes back *and* that since Sam won't be as against it as he used to be they'll have their bromance again ;_;
i feel the madness creeping in: SPN_Castiel_Sparksaadarshinah on April 6th, 2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
Balthazar was brilliant, no doubt about it, and his accent was SEXY AS HELL, but in the grand list of my all time favourite angels, he's still number three, below Cas and Gabe.

I think they've finally gotten it into their heads that killing all the supporting cast is bad - I mean, how many people from past cases have we seen in the last few episodes of S8? The guy from "Man's Best Friend With Benefits" (though honestly I didn't remember him). Krissy. Meg (bad example). Charlie in "LARP and the Real Girl" and the upcoming episode. With luck, we'll see Aaron again.

As much as I loved the Benny/Dean bromance, though, the Dean/Charlie bromance is my new brotp. Both characters are just so perfect and so exactly what Dean needs/needed in his life - Benny for his warrior, fighter side and Charlie for his not-so-inner geek.

But you're right, he really needs to come back. And he and Cas need to have a conversation where Cas isn't crazy, so he can see why Dean made all that fuss about finding him in the first place.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural dean/cas bffs <3janie_tangerine on April 6th, 2013 10:57 pm (UTC)
The thing is that if you speak with a French accent to me I don't understand anything anymore and also I have a ridiculous crush on Sebastian Roché so he's second for me (I mean Cas is my favorite angel forever without question) but Gabriel would go third ;) I just was REALLY invested in Balthazar dammit. (Also I liked that Cas had a bff but as it seems I'm very fond of people in my otp having very protective bffs.)

Yeah exactly - also I don't think the witch dude from Friends With Benefits ever was in another ep - like, they mentioned that Dean and Sam knew him but he hadn't been in the show with his own episode, so I suppose he counts as a possible supporter now (with Aaron maybe). And yes omg they need more people than.. well, Kevin, Krissy and Charlie only, it's THREE PEOPLE FFS, HAVE A BIT MORE.

omg I <333 Dean/Charlie so much as well ♥ but really I just want Dean to have all the friendships so yeah he should totally keep the both of them since they totally match his needs when we're talking friends Cas has obviously gone into boyfriend territory so I'm not counting him

Exactly, also because I mean Benny *did* save his life in Purgatory, they should have the nice bff to boyfriend conversation. Sigh I really hoped to see more Purgatory with them.. (... please have the rescue mission next season where everyone goes back there to search for Benny? they'll need a secondary plot, right? XD)
i feel the madness creeping in: SPN_balthazaraadarshinah on April 6th, 2013 11:05 pm (UTC)
Oh, I was so invested in Balthazar too - I mean, you think we finally get a brother Cas can be, well, ::brothers:: with and then.... ::sniffles in memory:: If Dean and Sam can have friends outside of each other, so should Cas, who has lost just as much (if not more) as they have.

There's Garth too. Don't' forget Garth. I mean, Kevin and Krissy and Charlie aren't exactly Bobby and Ellen and Jo and Rufus, but you've got to remember that so many hunters died during the Apocyalpse that there's really nobody left. Dean and Sam are THE veterans of of hunting, the most experienced that are left. Maybe with their new bunker they can sort of settle down into some sort of Men of Letters/Bobby-esque setup where they can hand out advice to/play FBI supervisors for the newbies more than hunt.

Cas is so obviously into boyfriend territory that I occasionally catch myself writing "Supernatural" instead of "Destiel" when I try to tag their ship on tumblr. But your right, Dean needs all the friends he can get, and he needs them to STOP DYING.

I obviously feel strongly about this.

IDK if rescuing Benny will ever be a plot in and of it's own, but Sam DID leave the portal between hell and purgatory open. So maybe if they close the gates of hell, the demons will still be able to get out that way, so they'll have to go into purgatory to close THAT hole too, and then they'll run into Benny and rescuing will happen. Maybe. Hopefully. Please.
the female ghost of tom joad: supernatural cas/balthy wtfjanie_tangerine on April 6th, 2013 11:15 pm (UTC)
RIIIGHT sorry Garth D: I tend to forget about him because he was introduced in my Least Favorite Episode ever but yeah, there's him too XD I'm being too harsh on them ;) but yeah I love the idea of S&D settling in the new bunker and Sam doing the MoL thing while maybe Dean goes hunting with Cas and then people drop by there and they all watch LOTR together and shit.

And YES YES THAT ABOUT BALTHAZAR DAMN IT Cas totally deserved someone who looked out mainly for him D: and I just really loved their relationship AND THEN THEY TOOK IT AWAY FROM MEEE NOOO DDD:

And hahahahahahahahahah YEAH GOOD POINT. Cas is so into boyfriend territory it's not even funny. Or at least platonic boyfriend. They passed the friends stage long ago...

Everyone should feel strongly about Dean having bffs.

Well they *do* have to do something next season if they close Heaven's gates this round (I doubt it, but still), and yes Sam YOU'RE A GENIUS, LEAVE THE DOOR TO HELL OPEN *facepalm* I'd really like it if they went there again though, so I'm totally into this 'let's go back into Purgatory, close every possible door and then let's get Benny out since we're at it.'
i feel the madness creeping in: SPN_angel-on-shoulderaadarshinah on April 6th, 2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
That would be the ultimate ending, and wouldn't it just be great if the writers, instead of ending the series in blood and tears, as they are wont to do, gave them a happy ending like that? 99% unlikely, I know, but a girl can dream.

Balthazar may be gone, but he's not forgotten.

They passed the friends stage so long ago that you cannot watch (and understand) all of S7 and most of S6 without acknowledging that Dean and Cas are in love with each other. You just can't.

I don't think closing Heaven's gates will happen this time around - maybe next season? But, if it does, I think they have to leave at least one door open and guarded so that souls can pass back and forth between earth and heaven as necessary, since souls have to go SOMEWHERE when they die. (Oh, god, wouldn't that be tragic if the sacrifice that has to be made in the finale is Sam standing guard over that gate forever, allowing only the souls and not the angels to pass, becoming a sort-of-supernatural being himself? ::Has just made sob cry hysterically at thought)
